Reaching Led On

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Savatthi.
At Sāvatthī.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Standing to one side, that devatā recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

“Upanīyati jīvitamappamāyu,
“Life is swept along, short is the life span;
“This life, so very short, is led onward;

Jarūpanītassa na santi tāṇā;
No shelters exist for one who has reached old age.
one led on to old age has no shelter.

Etaṁ bhayaṁ maraṇe pekkhamāno,
Seeing clearly this danger in death,
Seeing this peril in death,

Puññāni kayirātha sukhāvahānī”ti.
One should do deeds of merit that bring happiness. ”
do good deeds that bring you to joy.”

“Upanīyati jīvitamappamāyu,
“Life is swept along, short is the life span;
“This life, so very short, is led onward;

Jarūpanītassa na santi tāṇā;
No shelters exist for one who has reached old age.
one led on to old age has no shelter.

Etaṁ bhayaṁ maraṇe pekkhamāno,
Seeing clearly this danger in death,
Seeing this peril in death,

Lokāmisaṁ pajahe santipekkho”ti.
A seeker of peace should drop the world’s bait. ”
a seeker of peace would drop the world’s bait.”
