Natthiputtasamasutta

None Equal to That for a Son There’s Nothing Like a Child

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Savatthi.
At Sāvatthī.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Standing to one side, that devatā spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

“Natthi puttasamaṁ pemaṁ,
“There is no affection like that for a son,
“There’s no love like that for a child,

natthi gosamitaṁ dhanaṁ;
No wealth equal to cattle,
no wealth equal to cattle,

Natthi sūriyasamā ābhā,
There is no light like the sun,
no light like that of the sun,

samuddaparamā sarā”ti.
Among the waters the ocean is supreme. ”
and of waters the ocean is paramount.”

“Natthi attasamaṁ pemaṁ,
“There is no affection like that for oneself,
“There’s no love like that for oneself,

natthi dhaññasamaṁ dhanaṁ;
No wealth equal to grain,
no wealth equal to grain,

Natthi paññāsamā ābhā,
There is no light like wisdom,
no light like that of wisdom,

vuṭṭhi ve paramā sarā”ti.
Among the waters the rain is supreme. ”
and of waters the rain is paramount.”
