Sattisutta

The Sword A Sword

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Savatthi.
At Sāvatthī.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Standing to one side, that devatā recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

“Sattiyā viya omaṭṭho,
“As if smitten by a sword,
“Like they’re struck by a sword,

ḍayhamānova matthake;
As if his head were on fire,
like their head was on fire,

Kāmarāgappahānāya,
To abandon sensual lust.
a mendicant, mindful, should go forth,

sato bhikkhu paribbaje”ti.
A bhikkhu should wander mindfully ”
to give up sensual desire.”

“Sattiyā viya omaṭṭho,

Sakkāyadiṭṭhippahānāya,
To abandon identity view.
a mendicant, mindful, should go forth,

A bhikkhu should wander mindfully ”
to give up substantialist view.”
