Arahantasutta

The Arahant A Perfected One

“Yo hoti bhikkhu arahaṁ katāvī,
“If a bhikkhu is an arahant,
“When a mendicant is perfected, proficient,

Khīṇāsavo antimadehadhārī;
Consummate, with taints destroyed,
with defilements ended, bearing the final body:

Ahaṁ vadāmītipi so vadeyya,
Would he still say, ‘I speak’?
would they say, ‘I speak’,

Mamaṁ vadantītipi so vadeyyā”ti.
And would he say, ‘They speak to me’?”
or even ‘they speak to me’?”

“Yo hoti bhikkhu arahaṁ katāvī,
“If a bhikkhu is an arahant,
“When a mendicant is perfected, proficient,

He might still say, ‘I speak, ’
they would say, ‘I speak’,

Mamaṁ vadantītipi so vadeyya;
And he might say, ‘They speak to me. ’
and also ‘they speak to me’.

Loke samaññaṁ kusalo viditvā,
Skilful, knowing the world’s parlance,
Skillful, understanding the world’s conventions,

Vohāramattena so vohareyyā”ti.
He uses such terms as mere expressions. ”
they’d use these terms as no more than expressions.”

Mānaṁ nu kho so upagamma bhikkhu,
Is it because he has come upon conceit
is such a mendicant drawing close to conceit

Ahaṁ vadāmītipi so vadeyya;
That he would say, ‘I speak, ’
if they’d say, ‘I speak’,

Mamaṁ vadantītipi so vadeyyā”ti.
That he would say, ‘They speak to me’?”
or even ‘they speak to me’?”

“Pahīnamānassa na santi ganthā,
“No knots exist for one with conceit abandoned;
“Someone who has given up conceit has no ties,

Vidhūpitā mānaganthassa sabbe;
For him all knots of conceit are consumed.
the ties of conceit are all dissipated.

Sa vītivatto maññataṁ sumedho,
Though the wise one has transcended the conceived,
Though that intelligent person has transcended substantial reality,

Ahaṁ vadāmītipi so vadeyya.
He still might say, ‘I speak, ’
they’d still say, ‘I speak’,

Mamaṁ vadantītipi so vadeyya,
He might say too, ‘They speak to me. ’
and also ‘they speak to me’.
