Kiṁdadasutta
Giving What?
“Kiṁdado balado hoti,
“Giving what do you give strength?
A devatā: “Giving what does one give strength?
kiṁdado hoti vaṇṇado;
Giving what do you give beauty?
Giving what does one give beauty?
Kiṁdado sukhado hoti,
Giving what do you give happiness?
Giving what does one give ease?
kiṁdado hoti cakkhudo;
Giving what do you give vision?
Giving what does one give sight?
Ko ca sabbadado hoti,
And who is the giver of all?
Who is the giver of all?
taṁ me akkhāhi pucchito”ti.
Please answer my question.”
Being asked, please explain to me. ”
“Annado balado hoti,
“Giving food you give strength.
The Blessed One: “Giving food, one gives strength;
vatthado hoti vaṇṇado;
Giving clothes you give beauty.
Giving clothes, one gives beauty;
Yānado sukhado hoti,
Giving a vehicle you give happiness.
Giving a vehicle, one gives ease;
dīpado hoti cakkhudo.
Giving a lamp you give vision.
Giving a lamp, one gives sight.
So ca sabbadado hoti,
And the giver of all
The giver of all is
yo dadāti upassayaṁ;
is the one who gives a residence.
The one who gives a residence
Amataṁ dado ca so hoti,
But a person who teaches the Dhamma
The giver of the Deathless is
yo dhammamanusāsatī”ti.
gives the gift of freedom from death.”
