Stingy Stingy
“Yedha maccharino loke,
“Those folk in the world who are stingy,
A devatā: “Those who are stingy here in the world,
kadariyā paribhāsakā;
miserly and abusive,
Niggardly folk, revilers,
Aññesaṁ dadamānānaṁ,
setting up obstacles
For others engaged in giving alms:
antarāyakarā narā.
for others who give.
People who create obstacles
Kīdiso tesaṁ vipāko,
What kind of result do they reap?
What kind of result do they reap?
samparāyo ca kīdiso;
What kind of future life?
What kind of future destiny?
Bhagavantaṁ puṭṭhumāgamma,
We’ve come to ask the Buddha;
We’ve come to ask the Blessed One this:
kathaṁ jānemu taṁ mayan”ti.
how are we to understand this?”

Nirayaṁ tiracchānayoniṁ,
they’re reborn in hell,
They might be reborn in hell,
yamalokaṁ upapajjare;
the animal realm, or Yama’s world.

Sace enti manussattaṁ,
If they return to the human state,
“If they come back to the human state
dalidde jāyare kule.
they’re born in a poor family,
They are born in a poor family
Coḷaṁ piṇḍo ratī khiḍḍā,
where clothes, food, pleasure, and play
Where clothes, food, pleasures, and sport
yattha kicchena labbhati;
are hard to find.
Are obtained only with difficulty.
Parato āsīsare bālā,
They don’t even get
“Whatever the fools may expect from others,
tampi tesaṁ na labbhati;
what they hope for from others.
Even that they do not obtain.
Diṭṭhe dhammesa vipāko,
This is the result in the present life,
This is the result in this very life;
samparāye ca duggatī”ti.
and in the next, a bad destination.”
And in the future a bad destination. ”
“Itihetaṁ vijānāma,
“We get what you’re saying,
A devatā: “We understand thus what you have said;
aññaṁ pucchāma gotama;
and ask another question, Gotama.
We ask, O Gotama, another question:
Yedha laddhā manussattaṁ,
What about those who’ve gained the human state,
Those here who, on gaining the human state,
vadaññū vītamaccharā.
who are bountiful and rid of stinginess,
Are amiable and generous,
Buddhe pasannā dhamme ca,
confident in the Buddha and the teaching,
Confident in the Buddha and the Dhamma
saṅghe ca tibbagāravā;
with keen respect for the Saṅgha?
And deeply respectful towards the Saṅgha:

who are bountiful and rid of stinginess,

Buddhe pasannā dhamme ca,
confident in the Buddha and the teaching,
Confident in the Buddha and the Dhamma
saṅghe ca tibbagāravā;
with keen respect for the Saṅgha:
And deeply respectful towards the Saṅgha,
Ete saggā pakāsanti,
they illuminate the heavens
These brighten up the heavens
yattha te upapajjare.
wherever they’re reborn.
Where they’ve been reborn.
Sace enti manussattaṁ,
If they return to the human state,
“If they come back to the human state
aḍḍhe ājāyare kule;
they’re reborn in a rich family,
They are reborn in a rich family
Coḷaṁ piṇḍo ratī khiḍḍā,
where clothes, food, pleasure, and play
Where clothes, food, pleasures, and sport
yatthākicchena labbhati.
are easy to find.
Are obtained without difficulty.
Parasambhatesu bhogesu,
They rejoice like those
“They rejoice like the devas who control
vasavattīva modare;
who control the possessions of others.
The goods amassed by others.
Diṭṭhe dhammesa vipāko,
This is the result in the present life,
This is the result in this very life;
samparāye ca suggatī”ti.
and in the next, a good destination.”
And in the future a good destination. ”
