Beaten Down Afflicted
“Kenassubbhāhato loko,
“By what is the world beaten down?
“By what is the world afflicted?
kenassu parivārito;
By what is it surrounded?
By what is it enveloped?
Kena sallena otiṇṇo,
What dart has laid it low?
By what dart has it been wounded?
kissa dhūpāyito sadā”ti.
With what is it always fuming?”
With what is it always burning?”
“Maccunābbhāhato loko,
“The world is beaten down by death.
“The world is afflicted with death,
jarāya parivārito;
It’s surrounded by old age.
Enveloped by old age;
Taṇhāsallena otiṇṇo,
The dart of craving has struck it down.
Wounded by the dart of craving,
icchādhūpāyito sadā”ti.
It’s always fuming with desire.”
It is always burning with desire. ”
