Vuṭṭhisutta
Rain Rain
“Kiṁsu uppatataṁ seṭṭhaṁ,
“What’s the best of things that rise?
“What is the best of things that rise up?
kiṁsu nipatataṁ varaṁ;
And what’s the finest of things that fall?
What excels among things that fall down?
Kiṁsu pavajamānānaṁ,
And what of the things that go forth?
What is the best of things that go forth?
kiṁsu pavadataṁ varan”ti.
And who’s the finest speaker?”
Who is the most excellent of speakers?”
“Bījaṁ uppatataṁ seṭṭhaṁ,
“A seed’s the best of things that rise.
Another devatā: “A seed is the best of things that rise up;
vuṭṭhi nipatataṁ varā;
Rain’s the finest thing that falls.
Rain excels among things that fall down;
Gāvo pavajamānānaṁ,
Cattle, of things that go forth.
Cattle are the best of things that go forth;
putto pavadataṁ varo”ti.
And a child is the finest speaker.”
A son is the most excellent of speakers. ”
“Vijjā uppatataṁ seṭṭhā,
“Knowledge is best of things that rise.
The Blessed One: “Knowledge is the best of things that rise up;
avijjā nipatataṁ varā;
Ignorance the finest thing that falls.
Ignorance excels among things that fall down;
Saṅgho pavajamānānaṁ,
The Saṅgha, of things that go forth.
The Saṅgha is the best of things that go forth;
buddho pavadataṁ varo”ti.
And the Buddha is the finest speaker.”
The most excellent of speakers is the Buddha. ”
