Anāthapiṇḍikasutta

Anāthapiṇḍika With Anāthapiṇḍika

Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho anāthapiṇḍiko devaputto bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
Standing to one side, the young deva Anāthapiṇḍika recited these verses in the presence of the Blessed One:
Standing to one side, the god Anāthapiṇḍika recited these verses in the Buddha’s presence:

“Idañhi taṁ jetavanaṁ,
“This indeed is that Jeta’s Grove,
“This is indeed that Jeta’s Grove,

isisaṅghanisevitaṁ;
The resort of the Order of seers,
frequented by the Saṅgha of seers,

Āvutthaṁ dhammarājena,
Dwelt in by the Dhamma King,
where the King of Dhamma stayed:

pītisañjananaṁ mama.
A place that gives me joy.
it brings me joy!

Kammaṁ vijjā ca dhammo ca,
“Action, knowledge, righteousness,
Deeds, knowledge, and principle;

sīlaṁ jīvitamuttamaṁ;
Virtue, an excellent life:
ethical conduct, an excellent livelihood;

Etena maccā sujjhanti,
By this are mortals purified,
by these are mortals purified,

Not by clan or wealth.
not by clan or wealth.

Tasmā hi paṇḍito poso,
“Therefore a person who is wise,
That’s why an astute person,

sampassaṁ atthamattano;
Out of regard for his own good,
seeing what’s good for themselves,

Yoniso vicine dhammaṁ,
Should carefully examine the Dhamma:
would examine the teaching rationally,

evaṁ tattha visujjhati.
Thus he is purified in it.
and thus be purified in it.

Sāriputtova paññāya,
“Sāriputta truly is endowed with wisdom,
Sāriputta is full of wisdom,

With virtue and with inner peace.

Even a mendicant who has crossed over

might at best equal him.”

Idamavoca anāthapiṇḍiko devaputto.
This is what the young deva Anāthapiṇḍika said.
This is what the god Anāthapiṇḍika said.

Idaṁ vatvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyi.
Having said this, he paid homage to the Blessed One and, keeping him on the right, he disappeared right there.
Then he bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right side, before vanishing right there.

Atha kho bhagavā tassā rattiyā accayena bhikkhū āmantesi:
Then, when the night had passed, the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus thus:
Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha addressed the mendicants:

“imaṁ, bhikkhave, rattiṁ aññataro devaputto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yenāhaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā maṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.
“Bhikkhus, last night, when the night had advanced, a certain young deva … approached me …
“Mendicants, tonight, a certain glorious god, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, came to me, bowed, stood to one side,

Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho, bhikkhave, so devaputto mama santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
and in my presence recited these verses:
and recited these verses in my presence.” The Buddha then repeated the verses in full.

‘Idañhi taṁ jetavanaṁ,
“‘This indeed is that Jeta’s Grove, .

isisaṅghanisevitaṁ;

Āvutthaṁ dhammarājena,

pītisañjananaṁ mama.

Kammaṁ vijjā ca dhammo ca,

Idamavoca, bhikkhave, so devaputto.
’“This is what that young deva said.

Idaṁ vatvā maṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyī”ti.
Having said this, he paid homage to me and, keeping me on the right, he disappeared right there.

Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When this was said, the Venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One:
When he said this, Venerable Ānanda said to the Buddha,

“so hi nūna, bhante, anāthapiṇḍiko devaputto bhavissati.
“Venerable sir, that young deva must surely have been Anāthapiṇḍika.
“Sir, that god must surely have been Anāthapiṇḍika.

Anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati āyasmante sāriputte abhippasanno ahosī”ti.
For Anāthapiṇḍika the householder had full confidence in the Venerable Sāriputta. ”
For the householder Anāthapiṇḍika was devoted to Venerable Sāriputta.”

“Sādhu sādhu, ānanda, yāvatakaṁ kho, ānanda, takkāya pattabbaṁ anuppattaṁ taṁ tayā.
“Good, good, Ānanda! You have drawn the right inference by reasoning.
“Good, good, Ānanda. You’ve reached the logical conclusion, as far as logic goes.

Anāthapiṇḍiko hi so, ānanda, devaputto”ti.
For that young deva, Ānanda, was Anāthapiṇḍika. ”
For that was indeed the god Anāthapiṇḍika.”

Anāthapiṇḍikavaggo dutiyo.
