Mallikā With Queen Mallikā

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Tena kho pana samayena rājā pasenadi kosalo mallikāya deviyā saddhiṁ uparipāsādavaragato hoti.
Now on that occasion King Pasenadi of Kosala had gone together with Queen Mallikā to the upper terrace of the palace.
Now at that time King Pasenadi of Kosala was upstairs in the royal longhouse together with Queen Mallikā.

Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo mallikaṁ deviṁ etadavoca:
Then King Pasenadi of Kosala said to Queen Mallikā:
Then the king said to the queen,

“atthi nu kho te, mallike, kocañño attanā piyataro”ti?
“Is there, Mallikā, anyone more dear to you than yourself?”
“Mallikā, is there anyone more dear to you than yourself?”

“Natthi kho me, mahārāja, kocañño attanā piyataro.
“There is no one, great king, more dear to me than myself.
“No, great king, there isn’t.

Tuyhaṁ pana, mahārāja, atthañño koci attanā piyataro”ti?
But is there anyone, great king, more dear to you than yourself?”
But is there anyone more dear to you than yourself?”

“Mayhampi kho, mallike, natthañño koci attanā piyataro”ti.
“For me too, Mallikā, there is no one more dear than myself. ”
“For me also, Mallikā, there’s no-one.”

Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo pāsādā orohitvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then King Pasenadi of Kosala descended from the palace and approached the Blessed One. Having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One, sat down to one side, and said to him:
Then King Pasenadi of Kosala came downstairs from the stilt longhouse, went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened.

“idhāhaṁ, bhante, mallikāya deviyā saddhiṁ uparipāsādavaragato mallikaṁ deviṁ etadavocaṁ:

‘atthi nu kho te, mallike, kocañño attanā piyataro’ti?

Evaṁ vutte, bhante, mallikā devī maṁ etadavoca:

‘natthi kho me, mahārāja, kocañño attanā piyataro.

Tuyhaṁ pana, mahārāja, atthañño koci attanā piyataro’ti?

Evaṁ vuttāhaṁ, bhante, mallikaṁ deviṁ etadavocaṁ:

‘mayhampi kho, mallike, natthañño koci attanā piyataro’”ti.

Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Then the Blessed One, having understood the meaning of this,
Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha recited this verse:

“Sabbā disā anuparigamma cetasā,
“Having traversed all quarters with the mind,
“Having explored every quarter with the mind,

Nevajjhagā piyataramattanā kvaci;
One finds none anywhere dearer than oneself.
one finds no-one dearer than oneself.

Evaṁ piyo puthu attā paresaṁ,
Likewise, each person holds himself most dear;
Likewise for others, each holds themselves dear;

Tasmā na hiṁse paramattakāmo”ti.
Hence one who loves himself should not harm others. ”
so one who loves themselves would harm no other.”
