Atha kho rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto caturaṅginiṁ senaṁ sannayhitvā rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ abbhuyyāsi yena kāsi.
Then King Ajātasattu of Magadha, son of the princess of Videha, mobilized an army of four divisions and marched to Kāsi to attack King Pasenadi of Kosala.
Then King Ajātasattu of Magadha, the Videhan son, mobilized a four-division army and marched in the direction of Kāsi against King Pasenadi of Kosala.
Assosi kho rājā pasenadi kosalo:
When King Pasenadi heard of this,
King Pasenadi heard this report,
“rājā kira māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto caturaṅginiṁ senaṁ sannayhitvā mamaṁ abbhuyyāto yena kāsī”ti.
Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo caturaṅginiṁ senaṁ sannayhitvā rājānaṁ māgadhaṁ ajātasattuṁ vedehiputtaṁ paccuyyāsi yena kāsi.
he mobilized an army of four divisions and marched to Kāsi to defend it against Ajātasattu.

Atha kho rājā ca māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto rājā ca pasenadi kosalo saṅgāmesuṁ.
Then the two kings met in battle.
Then King Ajātasattu of Magadha and King Pasenadi of Kosala fought a battle.
Tasmiṁ kho pana saṅgāme rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ parājesi.
And in that battle Ajātasattu defeated Pasenadi,
In that battle King Ajātasattu defeated King Pasenadi,
Parājito ca rājā pasenadi kosalo sakameva rājadhāniṁ sāvatthiṁ paccuyyāsi.
who withdrew to his own capital at Sāvatthī.
and King Pasenadi, defeated, retreated to his own capital of Sāvatthī.
Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṁ piṇḍāya pavisiṁsu.
Then several mendicants robed up in the morning and, taking their bowls and robes, entered Sāvatthī for alms.
Then, in the morning, a number of bhikkhus dressed and, taking their bowls and robes, entered Sāvatthī for alms.
Sāvatthiyaṁ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkantā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ:
Then, after the meal, when they returned from almsround, they went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. Then the Buddha said:
When they had walked for alms in Sāvatthī and had returned from their alms round, after the meal they approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, sat down to one side, and reported what had happened.
“Idha, bhante, rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto caturaṅginiṁ senaṁ sannayhitvā rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ abbhuyyāsi yena kāsi.
Assosi kho, bhante, rājā pasenadi kosalo:
‘rājā kira māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto caturaṅginiṁ senaṁ sannayhitvā mamaṁ abbhuyyāto yena kāsī’ti.
Atha kho, bhante, rājā pasenadi kosalo caturaṅginiṁ senaṁ sannayhitvā rājānaṁ māgadhaṁ ajātasattuṁ vedehiputtaṁ paccuyyāsi yena kāsi.
Atha kho, bhante, rājā ca māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto rājā ca pasenadi kosalo saṅgāmesuṁ.
Tasmiṁ kho pana, bhante, saṅgāme rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ parājesi.
Parājito ca, bhante, rājā pasenadi kosalo sakameva rājadhāniṁ sāvatthiṁ paccuyyāsī”ti.
“Rājā, bhikkhave, māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto pāpamitto pāpasahāyo pāpasampavaṅko;
“Mendicants, King Ajātasattu has bad friends, companions, and associates.
] “Bhikkhus, King Ajātasattu of Magadha has evil friends, evil companions, evil comrades.
rājā ca kho, bhikkhave, pasenadi kosalo kalyāṇamitto kalyāṇasahāyo kalyāṇasampavaṅko.
But King Pasenadi has good friends, companions, and associates.
King Pasenadi of Kosala has good friends, good companions, good comrades.
Ajjeva, bhikkhave, rājā pasenadi kosalo imaṁ rattiṁ dukkhaṁ seti parājito”ti.
Yet on this day King Pasenadi will have a bad night’s sleep as one defeated.”
Yet for this day, bhikkhus, King Pasenadi, having been defeated, will sleep badly tonight.

That is what the Buddha said. …
“Jayaṁ veraṁ pasavati,
“Victory breeds enmity;
“Victory breeds enmity,
dukkhaṁ seti parājito;
the defeated sleep badly.
The defeated one sleeps badly.
Upasanto sukhaṁ seti,
The peaceful sleep at ease,
The peaceful one sleeps at ease,
hitvā jayaparājayan”ti.
having left victory and defeat behind.”
Having abandoned victory and defeat. ”
