Paṭhamamārapāsasutta

Māra’s Snare Māra’s Snares (1st)

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
Thus have I heard.
So I have heard.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā bārāṇasiyaṁ viharati isipatane migadāye.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Bārāṇasī in the Deer Park at Isipatana.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:
There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus thus:
There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,

“bhikkhavo”ti.
“Bhikkhus!”
“Mendicants!”

“Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.
“Venerable sir!” those bhikkhus replied.
“Venerable sir,” they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca:
The Blessed One said this:
The Buddha said this:

“Mayhaṁ kho, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikārā yoniso sammappadhānā anuttarā vimutti anuppattā, anuttarā vimutti sacchikatā.
“Bhikkhus, by careful attention, by careful right striving, I have arrived at unsurpassed liberation, I have realized unsurpassed liberation.
“Mendicants, I have attained and realized supreme freedom through rational application of mind and rational right effort.

Tumhepi, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikārā yoniso sammappadhānā anuttaraṁ vimuttiṁ anupāpuṇātha, anuttaraṁ vimuttiṁ sacchikarothā”ti.
You too, bhikkhus, by careful attention, by careful right striving, must arrive at unsurpassed liberation, must realize unsurpassed liberation. ”
You too should attain and realize supreme freedom through rational application of mind and rational right effort.”

Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then Māra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:
Then Māra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse:

“Baddhosi mārapāsena,
“You are bound by Māra’s snare
“You’re bound by Māra’s snares,

ye dibbā ye ca mānusā;
Both celestial and human;
both human and divine.

Mārabandhanabaddhosi,
You are bound by Māra’s bondage:
You’re bound by Māra’s bonds:

na me samaṇa mokkhasī”ti.
You won’t escape me, ascetic!”
you won’t escape me, ascetic!”

“Muttāhaṁ mārapāsena,
“I am freed from Māra’s snare
“I’m freed from Māra’s snares,

Ye dibbā ye ca mānusā;
Both celestial and human;
both human and divine.

Mārabandhanamuttomhi,
I am freed from Māra’s bondage:
I’m freed from Māra’s bonds.

Nihato tvamasi antakā”ti.
You’re defeated, End-maker!”
You’re beaten, terminator!”

Atha kho māro pāpimā …pe… tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Then Māra the Evil One … disappeared right there.
Then Māra … vanished right there.
