Atha kho bhagavā bahudevarattiṁ abbhokāse caṅkamitvā rattiyā paccūsasamayaṁ pāde pakkhāletvā vihāraṁ pavisitvā
He spent much of the night walking mindfully in the open. At the crack of dawn he washed his feet and entered his dwelling.
Then, when the night was fading, the Blessed One, having spent much of the night walking back and forth in the open, washed his feet, entered his dwelling,
dakkhiṇena passena sīhaseyyaṁ kappesi pāde pādaṁ accādhāya sato sampajāno uṭṭhānasaññaṁ manasi karitvā.
He laid down in the lion’s posture—on the right side, placing one foot on top of the other—mindful and aware, and focused on the time of getting up.
and lay down on his right side in the lion’s posture, with one leg overlapping the other, mindful and clearly comprehending, having attended to the idea of rising.
Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then Māra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse:
Then Māra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:
“Kiṁ soppasi kiṁ nu soppasi,
“What, you’re asleep? <j>Really, you’re asleep?
“What, you sleep? Why do you sleep?
Kimidaṁ soppasi dubbhago viya;
You sleep like a loser—<j>what’s up with that?
What’s this, you sleep like a wretch?
Suññamagāranti soppasi,
You sleep, thinking that the hut is empty.
Thinking ‘The hut’s empty’ you sleep:
Kimidaṁ soppasi sūriye uggate”ti.
You sleep when the sun has come up—<j>what’s up with that?”
What’s this, you sleep when the sun has risen?”
“Yassa jālinī visattikā,
“For them there is no craving—
“Entangling and binding,
Taṇhā natthi kuhiñci netave;
the weaver, the clinger—<j>to track them anywhere.
Within him craving no longer lurks, to lead him anywhere;
Sabbūpadhiparikkhayā buddho,
With the ending of all attachments <j>the awakened Buddha sleeps.
With the destruction of all acquisitions The Awakened One
Soppati kiṁ tavettha mārā”ti.
What’s that got to do with you, Māra?”
sleeps: Why should this concern you, Māra?”
Atha kho māro pāpimā …pe… tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Then Māra … vanished right there.
Then Māra the Evil One … disappeared right there.
