Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosalesu viharati ekasālāyaṁ brāhmaṇagāme.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Kosalans at the brahmin village of Ekasālā.
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans near the brahmin village of Ekasālā.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivuto dhammaṁ deseti.
Now on that occasion the Blessed One was teaching the Dhamma surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.
Now, at that time the Buddha was teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.

Atha kho mārassa pāpimato etadahosi:
Then it occurred to Māra the Evil One:
Then Māra thought,

“ayaṁ kho samaṇo gotamo mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivuto dhammaṁ deseti.
“This ascetic Gotama is teaching the Dhamma while surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.
“The ascetic Gotama is teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.

Yannūnāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkameyyaṁ vicakkhukammāyā”ti.
Let me approach the ascetic Gotama in order to confound them. ”
Why don’t I go and pull the wool over their eyes?”

Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then Māra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:
Then Māra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse:

“Netaṁ tava patirūpaṁ,
“This is not suitable for you,
“It’s not appropriate for you

yadaññamanusāsasi;
That you instruct others.
to instruct others.

Anurodhavirodhesu,
In attraction and repulsion,
As you engage in this,

mā sajjittho tadācaran”ti.
When so engaged don’t get caught.”
don’t get caught up in favoring and opposing.”

“Hitānukampī sambuddho,
“Compassionate for their welfare, The Buddha
“The Buddha instructs others

yadaññamanusāsati;
instructs others.
out of compassion for their welfare.

Anurodhavirodhehi,
From attraction and repulsion.
The Realized One is liberated

vippamutto tathāgato”ti.
The Tathāgata is fully released ”
from favoring and opposing.”

Atha kho māro pāpimā “jānāti maṁ bhagavā, jānāti maṁ sugato”ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Then Māra the Evil One … disappeared right there.
Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, “The Buddha knows me! The Holy One knows me!” miserable and sad, vanished right there.
