Pattasutta

The Alms Bowls Almsbowls

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
At Sāvatthī.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā pañcannaṁ upādānakkhandhānaṁ upādāya bhikkhūnaṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti.
Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk on the topic of the five grasping aggregates.
Now on that occasion the Blessed One was instructing, exhorting, inspiring, and gladdening the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk concerning the five aggregates subject to clinging.

Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.
And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening.
And those bhikkhus were listening to the Dhamma with eager ears, attending to it as a matter of vital concern, applying their whole minds to it.

Atha kho mārassa pāpimato etadahosi:
Then Māra thought,
Then it occurred to Māra the Evil One:

“ayaṁ kho samaṇo gotamo pañcannaṁ upādānakkhandhānaṁ upādāya bhikkhūnaṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti.
“This ascetic Gotama is educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk on the topic of the five grasping aggregates.
“This ascetic Gotama is instructing, exhorting, inspiring, and gladdening the bhikkhus …

Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.
And the mendicants are paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening.
who are applying their whole minds to it.

Yannūnāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkameyyaṁ vicakkhukammāyā”ti.
Why don’t I go and pull the wool over their eyes?”
Let me approach the ascetic Gotama in order to confound them. ”

Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā pattā abbhokāse nikkhittā honti.
At that time several alms bowls were placed in the open air.
Now on that occasion a number of almsbowls had been put out in the open.

Atha kho māro pāpimā balībaddavaṇṇaṁ abhinimminitvā yena te pattā tenupasaṅkami.
Then Māra the Wicked manifested in the form of an ox and approached those bowls.
Then Māra the Evil One manifested himself in the form of an ox and approached those almsbowls.

Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu aññataraṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:
One of the mendicants said to another,
Then one bhikkhu said to another:

“bhikkhu bhikkhu, eso balībaddo patte bhindeyyā”ti.
“Mendicant, mendicant, that ox will break the bowls.”
“Bhikkhu, bhikkhu! That ox may break the almsbowls. ”

Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā taṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:
When this was said, the Buddha said to that mendicant,
When this was said, the Blessed One said to that bhikkhu:

“na so, bhikkhu, balībaddo.
“Mendicant, that’s no ox.
“That is not an ox, bhikkhu.

Māro eso pāpimā tumhākaṁ vicakkhukammāya āgato”ti.
That’s Māra the Wicked come to pull the wool over your eyes!”
That is Māra the Evil One, who has come here in order to confound you. ”

Atha kho bhagavā “māro ayaṁ pāpimā” iti viditvā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then the Buddha, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, addressed him in verse:
Then the Blessed One, having understood, “This is Māra the Evil One, ” addressed Māra the Evil One in verses:

“Rūpaṁ vedayitaṁ saññā,
“Sights, feeling, and perception,
“Form, feeling, and perception,

viññāṇaṁ yañca saṅkhataṁ;
consciousness and what is chosen:
Consciousness, and formations—

Nesohamasmi netaṁ me,
‘I am not this’ and ‘this is not mine’;
‘I am not this, this isn’t mine, ’

evaṁ tattha virajjati.
that’s how to be free of desire for them.
Thus one is detached from it.

Evaṁ virattaṁ khemattaṁ,
When you’re detached, secure,
The one thus detached, secure,

sabbasaṁyojanātigaṁ;
all fetters transcended,
Who has gone beyond all ʹfettersʹ.

Anvesaṁ sabbaṭṭhānesu,
though Māra and his army chase everywhere
“Though they seek him everywhere,

mārasenāpi nājjhagā”ti.
they never find you.”
Māra and his army do not find him: ”

Atha kho māro pāpimā …pe… tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Then Māra … vanished right there.
Then Māra the Evil One … disappeared right there.
