Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā divāvihāragato hoti paṭisallīno.
Now on that occasion the Blessed One had gone for his day’s abiding and was in seclusion.
Now at that time the Buddha had gone into retreat for the day’s meditation.

Atha kho subrahmā ca paccekabrahmā suddhāvāso ca paccekabrahmā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā paccekaṁ dvārabāhaṁ nissāya aṭṭhaṁsu.
Then the independent brahmās Subrahmā and Suddhāvāsa approached the Blessed One and stood one at each doorpost.
Then the independent brahmās Subrahmā and Suddhāvāsa went to the Buddha and stationed themselves one by each door-post.

Atha kho subrahmā paccekabrahmā kokālikaṁ bhikkhuṁ ārabbha bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Then, referring to the bhikkhu Kokālika, the independent brahmā Subrahmā recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
Then Subrahmā recited this verse about the mendicant Kokālika in the Buddha’s presence:

“Appameyyaṁ paminanto,
An immeasurable one by taking his measure?
“What wise person here would judge

Kodha vidvā vikappaye;
“What wise man here would seek to define
the immeasurable by measuring them?

Appameyyaṁ pamāyinaṁ,
He who would measure an immeasurable one
I think anyone who’d do such a thing

Nivutaṁ taṁ maññe puthujjanan”ti.
Must be, I think, an obstructed worldling. ʺ
must be an ordinary person, shrouded in darkness.”
