With Devahita

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā vātehābādhiko hoti;
Now at that time the Buddha was afflicted by winds.
Now on that occasion the Blessed One was afflicted by winds
āyasmā ca upavāṇo bhagavato upaṭṭhāko hoti.
Venerable Upavāna was his carer.
and the Venerable Upavāṇa was his attendant.
Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ upavāṇaṁ āmantesi:
Then the Buddha said to Upavāna,
Then the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Upavāṇa thus:
“iṅgha me tvaṁ, upavāṇa, uṇhodakaṁ jānāhī”ti.
“Please, Upavāna, find some hot water for me.”
“Come now, Upavāṇa, find some hot water for me.
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā upavāṇo bhagavato paṭissutvā nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena devahitassa brāhmaṇassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā tuṇhībhūto ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.
“Yes, sir,” replied Upavāna. He robed up, and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of the brahmin Devahita, and stood silently to one side.
“Yes, venerable sir,” the Venerable Upavāṇa replied. Then he dressed and, taking bowl and robe, went to the residence of the brahmin Devahita, where he stood silently to one side.
Addasā kho devahito brāhmaṇo āyasmantaṁ upavāṇaṁ tuṇhībhūtaṁ ekamantaṁ ṭhitaṁ.
Devahita saw him standing there
The brahmin Devahita saw the Venerable Upavāṇa standing silently to one side
Disvāna āyasmantaṁ upavāṇaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
and addressed him in verse:

“Tuṇhībhūto bhavaṁ tiṭṭhaṁ,
“Silent stands the good sir,
“Silent, the worthy one stands,
muṇḍo saṅghāṭipāruto;
shaven, wrapped in his outer robe.
Shaven-headed, clad in a stitched robe.
Kiṁ patthayāno kiṁ esaṁ,
What do you want? What are you looking for?
What do you want, what do you seek,
kiṁ nu yācitumāgato”ti.
What have you come here to ask for?”
What have you come here to beg?”
“Arahaṁ sugato loke,
“The perfected one, the Holy One in the world,
[The Venerable Upavāṇa: ] “The Arahant, the Fortunate One in the world,
vātehābādhiko muni;
the sage is afflicted by winds.
The Sage, is afflicted with winds.
Sace uṇhodakaṁ atthi,
If there’s hot water,
If there is any hot water, brahmin,
munino dehi brāhmaṇa.
give it to the sage, brahmin.
Please give it for the Sage.
Pūjito pūjaneyyānaṁ,
I wish to bring it to the one
“He is worshipped by those worthy of worship,
sakkareyyāna sakkato;
who is esteemed by the estimable,
Honoured by those worthy of honour,
Apacito apaceyyānaṁ,
honored by the honorable,
Respected by those worthy of respect:
tassa icchāmi hātave”ti.
venerated by the venerable.”
It is to him that I wish to take it.
Atha kho devahito brāhmaṇo uṇhodakassa kājaṁ purisena gāhāpetvā phāṇitassa ca puṭaṁ āyasmato upavāṇassa pādāsi.
Then Devahita had a man fetch a carrying-pole with hot water. He also presented Upavāna with a jar of molasses.
Then the brahmin Devahita ordered a man to bring a carrying pole with hot water and presented a bag of molasses to the Venerable Upavāṇa.
Atha kho āyasmā upavāṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ uṇhodakena nhāpetvā uṇhodakena phāṇitaṁ āloletvā bhagavato pādāsi.
Then Venerable Upavāna went up to the Buddha and bathed him with the hot water. Then he stirred molasses into hot water and presented it to the Buddha.
Then the Venerable Upavāṇa approached the Blessed One. He had the Blessed One bathed with the hot water, and he mixed the molasses with hot water and offered it to him.
Atha kho bhagavato ābādho paṭippassambhi.
Then the Buddha’s illness died down.
Then the Blessed One’s ailment subsided.
Atha kho devahito brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.
Then the brahmin Devahita went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.
Then the brahmin Devahita approached the Blessed One and exchanged greetings with him,
Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side,
after which he sat down to one side
Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho devahito brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
and addressed the Buddha in verse:

“Kattha dajjā deyyadhammaṁ,
“Where should you give an available gift?
“Where should one give a proper gift? —just how?”
kattha dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ;
Where is a gift very fruitful?
Where does a gift bear great fruit?
Kathañhi yajamānassa,
How does one who is donating
How, for one bestowing alms,
kathaṁ ijjhati dakkhiṇā”ti.
ensure the success of their religious donation?”
Does an offering bring success?
“Pubbenivāsaṁ yo vedī,
“One who knows their past lives,
[The Blessed One: ] “One who has known his past abodes, Who sees heaven and the plane of woe, Who has reached the destruction of birth, A sage consummate in direct knowledge: Here one should give a proper gift, Here a gift bears great fruit.
saggāpāyañca passati;
sees heaven and places of loss,
Who sees heaven and the plane of woe,
Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto,
and has attained the ending of rebirth,
Who has reached the destruction of birth,
abhiññāvosito muni.
is a sage of perfect insight.
A sage consummate in direct knowledge:
Ettha dajjā deyyadhammaṁ,
Here you should give an available gift;
Here one should give a proper gift,
ettha dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ;
what’s given here is very fruitful.
Here a gift bears great fruit.
Evañhi yajamānassa,
That’s how a sponsor of sacrifices
That’s how, for one bestowing alms,
evaṁ ijjhati dakkhiṇā”ti.
ensures the success of their religious donation.”
An, offering brings success.
Evaṁ vutte, devahito brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When he had spoken, the brahmin Devahita said to the Buddha,
When this was said, the brahmin Devahita said to the Blessed One:
“abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…
“Excellent, Mister Gotama …
“Magnificent, Master Gotama! Magnificent, Master Gotama!…
upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
From this day forth, may Mister Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who from today has gone for refuge for life.
