Sāriputta With Sāriputta

Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā sāriputto sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
On one occasion the Venerable Sāriputta was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park.
At one time Venerable Sāriputta was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti poriyā vācāya vissaṭṭhāya anelagalāya atthassa viññāpaniyā.
Now on that occasion the Venerable Sāriputta was instructing, exhorting, inspiring, and gladdening the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk,[spoken] with speech that was polished, clear, articulate, expressing well the meaning.
Now at that time Venerable Sāriputta was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants in the assembly hall with a Dhamma talk. His words were polished, clear, articulate, and expressed the meaning.

Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.
And those bhikkhus were listening to the Dhamma with eager ears, attending to it as a matter of vital concern, directing their whole mind to it.
And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening.

Atha kho āyasmato vaṅgīsassa etadahosi:
Then it occurred to the Venerable Vaṅgīsa:
Then Venerable Vaṅgīsa thought,

“ayaṁ kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti poriyā vācāya vissaṭṭhāya anelagalāya atthassa viññāpaniyā.
”This Venerable Sāriputta is instructing the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk, [spoken] with speech that is polished, clear, articulate, expressing well the meaning.
“This Venerable Sāriputta is educating the mendicants. …

Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.
And those bhikkhus are listening to the Dhamma with eager ears...
And those mendicants are paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening.

Yannūnāhaṁ āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ sammukhā sāruppāhi gāthāhi abhitthaveyyan”ti.
Let me extol the Venerable Sāriputta to his face with suitable verses.”
Why don’t I extoll him in his presence with fitting verses?”

Atha kho āyasmā vaṅgīso uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yenāyasmā sāriputto tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ etadavoca:
Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, and, raising his joined hands in reverential salutation towards the Venerable Sāriputta, said to him:
Then Venerable Vaṅgīsa got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward Sāriputta, and said,

“paṭibhāti maṁ, āvuso sāriputta, paṭibhāti maṁ, āvuso sāriputtā”ti.
“An inspiration has come to me, friend Sāriputta! An inspiration has come to me, friend Sāriputta!”
“I feel inspired to speak, Reverend Sāriputta! I feel inspired to speak, Reverend Sāriputta!”

“Paṭibhātu taṁ, āvuso vaṅgīsā”ti.
“Then express your inspiration, friend Vaṅgīsa.”
“Then speak as you feel inspired,” said Sāriputta.

Atha kho āyasmā vaṅgīso āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ sammukhā sāruppāhi gāthāhi abhitthavi:
Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa extolled the Venerable Sāriputta to his face with suitable verses
Then Vaṅgīsa extolled Sāriputta in his presence with fitting verses:

“Gambhīrapañño medhāvī,
“Deep in wisdom, intelligent,
“Deep in wisdom, intelligent,

maggāmaggassa kovido;
Skilled in the true path and the false,
expert in what is the path <j>and what is not the path;

Sāriputto mahāpañño,
Sāriputta, of great wisdom,
Sāriputta, so greatly wise,

dhammaṁ deseti bhikkhunaṁ.
Teaches the Dhamma to the bhikkhus.
teaches Dhamma to the mendicants.

Saṅkhittenapi deseti,
“He teaches briefly,
He teaches in brief,

vitthārenapi bhāsati;
He speaks in detail.
or he speaks at length.

Sāḷikāyiva nigghoso,
His voice, like that of a myna bird,
His call, like a myna bird,

paṭibhānaṁ udīrayi.
Pours forth inspired discourse.
overflows with inspiration.

Tassa taṁ desayantassa,
“As he teaches them, they listen
While he teaches

suṇanti madhuraṁ giraṁ;
To his sweet utterance.
the mendicants listen to his sweet voice,

Sarena rajanīyena,
Sonorous and lovely,
sounding attractive,

savanīyena vaggunā;
Uplifted in mind, made joyful
clear and graceful.

Udaggacittā muditā,
By his delightful voice,
They listen joyfully,

sotaṁ odhenti bhikkhavo”ti.
The bhikkhus incline their ears.
their hearts elated.”
