Vaṅgīsasutta

With Vaṅgīsa Vaṅgīsa

Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā vaṅgīso sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time Venerable Vaṅgīsa was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
On one occasion the Venerable Vaṅgīsa was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā vaṅgīso aciraarahattappatto hutvā vimuttisukhaṁ paṭisaṁvedī tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
Now at that time Vaṅgīsa had recently attained perfection. While experiencing the bliss of freedom, on that occasion he recited these verses:
Now on that occasion the Venerable Vaṅgīsa had only recently attained arahantship and, while experiencing the happiness of liberation, on that occasion he recited these verses:

“Kāveyyamattā vicarimha pubbe,
“We used to wander, drunk on poetry,
Drunk on poetry, I used to wander

Gāmā gāmaṁ purā puraṁ;
village to village, town to town.
From village to village, town to town.

Athaddasāma sambuddhaṁ,
Then we saw the Buddha,
Then I saw the Enlightened One

Saddhā no upapajjatha.
and faith arose in us.
And faith arose within me.

So me dhammamadesesi,
He taught me Dhamma:
He then taught me the Dhamma:

khandhāyatanadhātuyo;
the aggregates, sense fields, and elements.
Aggregates, sense bases, and elements.

Tassāhaṁ dhammaṁ sutvāna,
When I heard his teaching
Having heard the Dhamma from him,

pabbajiṁ anagāriyaṁ.
I went forth to homelessness.
I went forth into homelessness.

Bahunnaṁ vata atthāya,
It was truly for the benefit of many
Indeed, for the good of many,

bodhiṁ ajjhagamā muni;
that the sage achieved awakening—
The sage attained enlightenment,

Bhikkhūnaṁ bhikkhunīnañca,
for the monks and for the nuns
For the bhikkhus and bhikkhunīs

ye niyāmagataddasā.
who see that they’ve reached certainty.
Who have reached and seen the fixed course.

Svāgataṁ vata me āsi,
It was so welcome for me
Welcome indeed has it been for me,

mama buddhassa santike;
to be in the presence of the Buddha.
My coming into the Buddha’s presence.

Tisso vijjā anuppattā,
I’ve attained the three knowledges,
The three knowledges have been obtained,

kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ.
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
The Buddha’s Teaching has been done.

Pubbenivāsaṁ jānāmi,
I know my past lives,
I know now my past abodes,

Dibbacakkhuṁ visodhitaṁ;
my clairvoyance is purified,
The divine eye is purified.

Tevijjo iddhipattomhi,
I am master of three knowledges, <j>attained in psychic power,
A triple knowledge man, attained to spiritual powers,

Cetopariyāyakovido”ti.
expert in comprehending the minds of others.”
I am skilled in the course of others’ minds.

Tassuddānaṁ

Nikkhantaṁ arati ceva,

pesalā atimaññanā;

Ānandena subhāsitā,

sāriputtapavāraṇā;

Parosahassaṁ koṇḍañño,

moggallānena gaggarā;

Vaṅgīsena dvādasāti.

Vaṅgīsasaṁyuttaṁ samattaṁ.
