Buddhavandanāsutta

Veneration of the Buddha Homage to the Buddha

Sāvatthiyaṁ jetavane.
At Sāvatthī in Jeta's Grove.
Near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā divāvihāragato hoti paṭisallīno.
Now on that occasion the Blessed One had gone for his day's abiding and was in seclusion.
Now at that time the Buddha had gone into retreat for the day’s meditation.

Atha kho sakko ca devānamindo brahmā ca sahampati yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā paccekaṁ dvārabāhaṁ nissāya aṭṭhaṁsu.
Then Sakka, lord of the devas, and Brahmā Sahampati approached the Blessed One and stood one at each doorpost.
Then Sakka, lord of gods, and Brahmā Sahampati approached the Buddha and stationed themselves one by each door-post.

Atha kho sakko devānamindo bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Then Sakka, lord of the devas, recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
Then Sakka recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

“Uṭṭhehi vīra vijitasaṅgāma,
“Rise up, O hero, victor in battle! Your burden lowered debt-free one,
“Rise, hero! Victor in battle, with burden put down,

Pannabhāra anaṇa vicara loke;
wander in the world.
wander the world free of debt.

Cittañca te suvimuttaṁ,
Your mind is fully liberated,
Your mind is fully liberated,

Cando yathā pannarasāya rattin”ti.
Like the moon on the fifteenth night.”
like the moon on the fifteenth night.”

“Na kho, devānaminda, tathāgatā evaṁ vanditabbā.
“It is not in such a way that the Tathagatas are to be venerated, lord of the devas.
“Lord of gods, that’s not how to pay homage to the Realized Ones.

Evañca kho, devānaminda, tathāgatā vanditabbā:
The Tathāgatas are to be venerated thus:
This is how it should be done:

‘Uṭṭhehi vīra vijitasaṅgāma,
Rise up, O hero, victor in battle! O caravan leader,
‘Rise, hero! Victor in battle, leader of the caravan,

Satthavāha anaṇa vicara loke;
debt-free one, wander in the world.
wander the world free of debt.

Desassu bhagavā dhammaṁ,
Teach the Dhamma, Blessed One:
Let the Blessed One teach the Dhamma!

Aññātāro bhavissantī’”ti.
There will be those who will understand.”
There will be those who understand!’”
