Aghamūlasutta

The Root of Misery

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.

“Aghañca, bhikkhave, desessāmi aghamūlañca.
“Mendicants, I will teach you misery and the root of misery.

Taṁ suṇātha.
Listen …

Katamañca, bhikkhave, aghaṁ?
And what is misery?

Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, aghaṁ, vedanā aghaṁ, saññā aghaṁ, saṅkhārā aghaṁ, viññāṇaṁ aghaṁ.
Form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness are misery.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, aghaṁ.
This is called misery.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, aghamūlaṁ?
And what is the root of misery?

Yāyaṁ taṇhā ponobhavikā nandīrāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī;
It’s the craving that leads to future lives, mixed up with relishing and greed, taking pleasure wherever it lands. That is,

Seyyathidaṁ—kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā.
craving for sensual pleasures, craving to continue existence, and craving to end existence.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, aghamūlan”ti.
This is called the root of misery.”
