States of Existence
“Tayome, bhikkhave, bhavā.
“There are these three states of existence.
Katame tayo?
What three?
Kāmabhavo, rūpabhavo, arūpabhavo—
Existence in the sensual realm, the realm of luminous form, and the formless realm.
ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo bhavā.
These are the three states of existence.
Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tiṇṇannaṁ bhavānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo”ti.
The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three states of existence.”
Catutthaṁ.
