3. Chaḷindriyavagga
3. The Six Faculties

Sotāpannasutta

A Stream-Enterer

“Chayimāni, bhikkhave, indriyāni.
“Mendicants, there are these six faculties.

Katamāni cha?
What six?

Cakkhundriyaṁ …pe… manindriyaṁ.
The faculties of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind.

Yato kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako imesaṁ channaṁ indriyānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti—
A noble disciple comes to truly understand these six faculties’ origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape.

ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako sotāpanno avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaṇo”ti.
Such a noble disciple is called a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.”

Chaṭṭhaṁ.
