Saṅghātherīgāthā

Saṅghā Verses of the Elder Saṅghā

“Hitvā ghare pabbajitvā,
I gave up my home, my child, my cattle,
“I left behind the house and went forth.

hitvā puttaṁ pasuṁ piyaṁ;
and all that I love, and went forth.
I left behind child, cattle, and all that is dear.

Hitvā rāgañca dosañca,
And now that I’ve given up desire and hate,
I left behind passion and aversion,

avijjañca virājiya;
dispelled ignorance,
and I left behind ignorance—by means of dispassion.

Samūlaṁ taṇhamabbuyha,
and plucked out craving, root and all,
Having pulled out craving by the roots,

upasantāmhi nibbutā”ti.
I’m at peace, I’m quenched.
I am quenched and at peace.”
