Mettikātherīgāthā

Verses of the Elder Mettikā Mettikā

“Kiñcāpi khomhi dukkhitā,
“I was in pain,
Though in pain,

dubbalā gatayobbanā;
weak, and long past my youth,
feeble, my youth long gone,

Daṇḍamolubbha gacchāmi,
but, leaning on a stick,
I climb the mountain,

pabbataṁ abhirūhiya.
I climbed the mountain.
leaning on a staff.

Nikkhipitvāna saṅghāṭiṁ,
I laid down the outer robe
Having laid down my outer robe

pattakañca nikujjiya;
and overturned the bowl,
and overturned my bowl,

Nisinnā camhi selamhi,
sitting down on a stone,
sitting on a rock,

atha cittaṁ vimucci me;
in that moment, my mind was liberated.
my mind was freed.

Tisso vijjā anuppattā,
I obtained the three knowledges
I’ve attained the three knowledges,

kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.
and completed the teaching of the Buddha.”
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
