Somātherīgāthā

Verses of the Elder Somā Somā

“Yaṁ taṁ isīhi pattabbaṁ,
“That which can be attained by the seers,
“That state’s very challenging;

ṭhānaṁ durabhisambhavaṁ;
that stage so hard to reach,
it’s for the sages to attain.

Na taṁ dvaṅgulapaññāya,
cannot be attained by a woman,
It’s not possible for a woman,

sakkā pappotumitthiyā”.
with her wisdom as small as two fingers.”
with her two-fingered wisdom.”

“Itthibhāvo no kiṁ kayirā,
“How does being a woman have anything to do
“What difference does womanhood make

cittamhi susamāhite;
with a well-collected mind,
when the mind is serene,

Ñāṇamhi vattamānamhi,
when knowledge is present,
and knowledge is present

sammā dhammaṁ vipassato.
and one sees rightly into Dhamma?
as you rightly discern the Dhamma.

Sabbattha vihatā nandī,
In this way all fixation is annihilated,
Relishing is destroyed in every respect,

Tamokhandho padālito;
the mass of darkness destroyed.
and the mass of darkness is shattered.

Evaṁ jānāhi pāpima,
Thus be aware, Wicked One,
So know this, Wicked One:

Nihato tvamasi antakā”ti.
Death—you are destroyed!”
you’re beaten, terminator!”
