Sakulā Verses of the Elder Sakulā

“Agārasmiṁ vasantīhaṁ,
While staying at home
“I was a householder

dhammaṁ sutvāna bhikkhuno;
I heard the teaching from a monk.
when I heard the Dhamma from a bhikkhu.

Addasaṁ virajaṁ dhammaṁ,
I saw the stainless Dhamma,
I saw the stainless Dhamma,

nibbānaṁ padamaccutaṁ.
extinguishment, the state that does not pass.
the path to Nirvana, that which never dies.

Sāhaṁ puttaṁ dhītarañca,
Leaving behind my son and my daughter,
I left behind daughter and son,

dhanadhaññañca chaḍḍiya;
my riches and my grain,
wealth and grain.

Kese chedāpayitvāna,
I had my hair cut off,
I had my hair cut off,

pabbajiṁ anagāriyaṁ.
and went forth to homelessness.
and went forth into homelessness.

Sikkhamānā ahaṁ santī,
As a trainee nun,
I trained myself peacefully,

bhāventī maggamañjasaṁ;
I developed the direct path.
cultivating the path forward.

Pahāsiṁ rāgadosañca,
I gave up greed and hate,
I discarded passion and aversion,

tadekaṭṭhe ca āsave.
along with associated defilements.
and all other influences.

Bhikkhunī upasampajja,
When I was fully ordained as a nun,
As an ordained bhikkhunī

pubbajātimanussariṁ;
I recollected my past lives,
I have remembered my previous lives.

Dibbacakkhu visodhitaṁ,
and purified my clairvoyance,
My divine eye is purified,

vimalaṁ sādhubhāvitaṁ.
immaculate and fully developed.
flawless, and well-developed.

Saṅkhāre parato disvā,
Conditions are born of causes, crumbling;
I have seen formations as alien,

hetujāte palokite;
having seen them as other,
arisen due to conditions, and subject to decay.

Pahāsiṁ āsave sabbe,
I gave up all defilements,
I have eliminated all the influences,

sītibhūtāmhi nibbutā”ti.
I’m cooled and quenched.
I have become cool and quenched.”
