AƱƱatitthiyasutta Followers of Other Religions

ā€œSace, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyā paribbājakā evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: ā€œMendicants, if wanderers of other religions were to ask:

ā€˜tayome, āvuso, dhammā. ā€˜There are these three things.

Katame tayo? What three?

Rāgo, doso, mohoā€”Greed, hate, and delusion.

ime kho, āvuso, tayo dhammā. These are the three things.

Imesaį¹, āvuso, tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ dhammānaį¹ ko viseso ko adhippayāso kiį¹ nānākaraį¹‡anā€™ti? Whatā€™s the difference between them?ā€™

Evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ kinti byākareyyāthāā€ti? How would you answer them?ā€

ā€œBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakā no, bhante, dhammā bhagavaį¹nettikā bhagavaį¹paį¹­isaraį¹‡Ä. Sādhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaį¹yeva paį¹­ibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvā bhikkhÅ« dhāressantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā€

ā€œTena hi, bhikkhave, suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, mendicants, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œSace, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyā paribbājakā evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: ā€œMendicants, if wanderers of other religions were to ask:

ā€˜tayome, āvuso, dhammā. ā€˜There are these three things.

Katame tayo? What three?

Rāgo, doso, mohoā€”Greed, hate, and delusion.

imesaį¹, āvuso, tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ dhammānaį¹ ko viseso ko adhippayāso kiį¹ nānākaraį¹‡anā€™ti? Whatā€™s the difference between them?ā€™

Evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ byākareyyātha: You should answer them:

ā€˜rāgo kho, āvuso, appasāvajjo dandhavirāgÄ«, doso mahāsāvajjo khippavirāgÄ«, moho mahāsāvajjo dandhavirāgÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Greed, reverends, is mildly blameworthy, but slow to fade away. Hate is very blameworthy, but quick to fade away. Delusion is very blameworthy, and slow to fade away.ā€™

ā€˜Ko panāvuso, hetu ko paccayo yena anuppanno vā rāgo uppajjati uppanno vā rāgo bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saį¹vattatÄ«ā€™ti? And if they ask: ā€˜What is the cause, what is the reason why greed arises, and once arisen it increases and grows?ā€™

ā€˜ā€œSubhanimittanā€tissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. You should say: ā€˜The beautiful feature of things.

Tassa subhanimittaį¹ ayoniso manasi karoto anuppanno vā rāgo uppajjati uppanno vā rāgo bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saį¹vattati. When you apply the mind irrationally to the beautiful feature of things, greed arises, and once arisen it increases and grows.

Ayaį¹ kho, āvuso, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo yena anuppanno vā rāgo uppajjati uppanno vā rāgo bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saį¹vattatÄ«ā€™ti. This is the cause, this is the reason why greed arises, and once arisen it increases and grows.ā€™

ā€˜Ko panāvuso, hetu ko paccayo yena anuppanno vā doso uppajjati uppanno vā doso bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saį¹vattatÄ«ā€™ti? And if they ask: ā€˜What is the cause, what is the reason why hate arises, and once arisen it increases and grows?ā€™

ā€˜ā€œPaį¹­ighanimittanā€tissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. You should say: ā€˜The feature of harshness.

Tassa paį¹­ighanimittaį¹ ayoniso manasi karoto anuppanno vā doso uppajjati uppanno vā doso bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saį¹vattati. When you apply the mind irrationally to the feature of harshness, hate arises, and once arisen it increases and grows.

Ayaį¹ kho, āvuso, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo yena anuppanno vā doso uppajjati uppanno vā doso bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saį¹vattatÄ«ā€™ti. This is the cause, this is the reason why hate arises, and once arisen it increases and grows.ā€™

ā€˜Ko panāvuso, hetu ko paccayo yena anuppanno vā moho uppajjati uppanno vā moho bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saį¹vattatÄ«ā€™ti? And if they ask: ā€˜What is the cause, what is the reason why delusion arises, and once arisen it increases and grows?ā€™

ā€˜ā€œAyoniso manasikāroā€tissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. You should say: ā€˜Irrational application of mind.

Tassa ayoniso manasi karoto anuppanno vā moho uppajjati uppanno vā moho bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saį¹vattati. When you apply the mind irrationally, delusion arises, and once arisen it increases and grows.

Ayaį¹ kho, āvuso, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo yena anuppanno vā moho uppajjati uppanno vā moho bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saį¹vattatÄ«ā€™ti. This is the cause, this is the reason why delusion arises, and once arisen it increases and grows.ā€™

ā€˜Ko panāvuso, hetu ko paccayo yena anuppanno ceva rāgo nuppajjati uppanno ca rāgo pahÄ«yatÄ«ā€™ti? And if they ask, ā€˜What is the cause, what is the reason why greed doesnā€™t arise, or if itā€™s already arisen itā€™s given up?ā€™

ā€˜ā€œAsubhanimittanā€tissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. You should say: ā€˜The ugly feature of things.

Tassa asubhanimittaį¹ yoniso manasi karoto anuppanno ceva rāgo nuppajjati uppanno ca rāgo pahÄ«yati. When you apply the mind rationally on the ugly feature of things, greed doesnā€™t arise, or if itā€™s already arisen itā€™s given up.

Ayaį¹ kho, āvuso, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo yena anuppanno ceva rāgo nuppajjati uppanno ca rāgo pahÄ«yatÄ«ā€™ti. This is the cause, this is the reason why greed doesnā€™t arise, or if itā€™s already arisen itā€™s given up.ā€™

ā€˜Ko panāvuso, hetu ko paccayo yena anuppanno ceva doso nuppajjati uppanno ca doso pahÄ«yatÄ«ā€™ti? And if they ask, ā€˜What is the cause, what is the reason why hate doesnā€™t arise, or if itā€™s already arisen itā€™s given up?ā€™

ā€˜ā€œMettā cetovimuttÄ«ā€tissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. You should say: ā€˜The heartā€™s release by love.ā€™

Tassa mettaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ yoniso manasi karoto anuppanno ceva doso nuppajjati uppanno ca doso pahÄ«yati. When you apply the mind rationally on the heartā€™s release by love, hate doesnā€™t arise, or if itā€™s already arisen itā€™s given up.

Ayaį¹ kho, āvuso, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo yena anuppanno ceva doso nuppajjati uppanno ca doso pahÄ«yatÄ«ā€™ti. This is the cause, this is the reason why hate doesnā€™t arise, or if itā€™s already arisen itā€™s given up.ā€™

ā€˜Ko panāvuso, hetu ko paccayo yena anuppanno ceva moho nuppajjati uppanno ca moho pahÄ«yatÄ«ā€™ti? And if they ask, ā€˜What is the cause, what is the reason why delusion doesnā€™t arise, or if itā€™s already arisen itā€™s given up?ā€™

ā€˜ā€œYonisomanasikāroā€tissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. You should say: ā€˜Rational application of mind.

Tassa yoniso manasi karoto anuppanno ceva moho nuppajjati uppanno ca moho pahÄ«yati. When you apply the mind rationally, delusion doesnā€™t arise, or if itā€™s already arisen itā€™s given up.

Ayaį¹ kho, āvuso, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo yena anuppanno vā moho nuppajjati uppanno ca moho pahÄ«yatÄ«ā€™ā€ti. This is the cause, this is the reason why delusion doesnā€™t arise, or if itā€™s already arisen itā€™s given up.ā€™ā€
