Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho āyasmantaį¹ ānandaį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

ā€œYe, ānanda, anukampeyyātha ye ca sotabbaį¹ maƱƱeyyuį¹ mittā vā amaccā vā ƱātÄ« vā sālohitā vā te vo, ānanda, tÄ«su į¹­hānesu samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā. ā€œÄ€nanda, those who you have sympathy for, and those worth listening toā€”friends and colleagues, relatives and familyā€”should be encouraged, supported, and established in three things.

Buddhe aveccappasāde samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā: Experiential confidence in the Buddha:

ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaį¹, buddho bhagavāā€™ti, ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā€™

dhamme aveccappasāde samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā: Experiential confidence in the teaching:

ā€˜svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiį¹­į¹­hiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«ā€™ti, ā€˜The teaching is well explained by the Buddhaā€”apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.ā€™

saį¹…ghe aveccappasāde samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā: Experiential confidence in the Saį¹…gha:

ā€˜suppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho ujuppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho Ʊāyappaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho sāmÄ«cippaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, yadidaį¹ cattāri purisayugāni aį¹­į¹­ha purisapuggalā esa bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiį¹‡eyyo aƱjalikaraį¹‡Ä«yo anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassāā€™ti. ā€˜The Saį¹…gha of the Buddhaā€™s disciples is practicing the way thatā€™s good, sincere, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saį¹…gha of the Buddhaā€™s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.ā€™

Siyā, ānanda, catunnaį¹ mahābhÅ«tānaį¹ aƱƱathattaį¹ā€”There might be change in the four principal statesā€”

pathavÄ«dhātuyā āpodhātuyā tejodhātuyā vāyodhātuyā, na tveva buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgatassa ariyasāvakassa siyā aƱƱathattaį¹ tatridaį¹ aƱƱathattaį¹. earth, water, air, and fireā€”but a noble disciple with experiential confidence in the Buddha would never change.

So vatānanda, buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato ariyasāvako nirayaį¹ vā tiracchānayoniį¹ vā pettivisayaį¹ vā upapajjissatÄ«ti netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. In this context, ā€˜changeā€™ means that such a noble disciple will be reborn in hell, the animal realm, or the ghost realm: this is quite impossible.

Siyā, ānanda, catunnaį¹ mahābhÅ«tānaį¹ aƱƱathattaį¹ā€”There might be change in the four principal statesā€”

pathavÄ«dhātuyā āpodhātuyā tejodhātuyā vāyodhātuyā, na tveva dhamme ā€¦peā€¦ earth, water, air, and fireā€”but a noble disciple with experiential confidence in the teaching ā€¦

na tveva saį¹…ghe aveccappasādena samannāgatassa ariyasāvakassa siyā aƱƱathattaį¹ tatridaį¹ aƱƱathattaį¹. or the Saį¹…gha would never change.

So vatānanda, saį¹…ghe aveccappasādena samannāgato ariyasāvako nirayaį¹ vā tiracchānayoniį¹ vā pettivisayaį¹ vā upapajjissatÄ«ti netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati.
