Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami ā¦peā¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,
āsÄdhu me, bhante, bhagavÄ saį¹
khittena dhammaį¹ desetu, yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvÄ eko vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanāti. āSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iāve heard it, Iāll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā
āEvamevaį¹ panidhekacce moghapurisÄ mamaƱƱeva ajjhesanti. āThis is exactly how some silly people ask me for something.
Dhamme ca bhÄsite mamaƱƱeva anubandhitabbaį¹ maƱƱantÄ«āti. But when the teaching has been explained they think only of following me around.ā
āDesetu me, bhante, bhagavÄ saį¹
khittena dhammaį¹, desetu sugato saį¹
khittena dhammaį¹. Appeva nÄmÄhaį¹ bhagavato bhÄsitassa atthaį¹ ÄjÄneyyaį¹, appeva nÄmÄhaį¹ bhagavato bhÄsitassa dÄyÄdo assanāti. āSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief! May the Holy One teach me the Dhamma in brief! Hopefully I can understand the meaning of what the Buddha says! Hopefully I can be an heir of the Buddhaās teaching!ā
āTasmÄtiha te, bhikkhu, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: āWell then, mendicant, you should train like this:
āajjhattaį¹ me cittaį¹ į¹hitaį¹ bhavissati susaį¹į¹hitaį¹, na ca uppannÄ pÄpakÄ akusalÄ dhammÄ cittaį¹ pariyÄdÄya į¹hassantÄ«āti. āMy mind will be steady and well settled internally. And bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen will not occupy my mind.ā
EvaƱhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaį¹. Thatās how you should train.
Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ajjhattaį¹ cittaį¹ į¹hitaį¹ hoti susaį¹į¹hitaį¹, na ca uppannÄ pÄpakÄ akusalÄ dhammÄ cittaį¹ pariyÄdÄya tiį¹į¹hanti, tato te, bhikkhu, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: When your mind is steady and well settled internally, and bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen donāt occupy your mind, then you should train like this:
āmettÄ me cetovimutti bhÄvitÄ bhavissati bahulÄ«katÄ yÄnÄ«katÄ vatthukatÄ anuį¹į¹hitÄ paricitÄ susamÄraddhÄāti. āI will develop the heartās release by love. Iāll cultivate it, make it my vehicle and my basis, keep it up, consolidate it, and properly implement it.ā
EvaƱhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaį¹. Thatās how you should train.
Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaį¹ samÄdhi evaį¹ bhÄvito hoti bahulÄ«kato, tato tvaį¹, bhikkhu, imaį¹ samÄdhiį¹ savitakkampi savicÄraį¹ bhÄveyyÄsi, avitakkampi vicÄramattaį¹ bhÄveyyÄsi, avitakkampi avicÄraį¹ bhÄveyyÄsi, sappÄ«tikampi bhÄveyyÄsi, nippÄ«tikampi bhÄveyyÄsi, sÄtasahagatampi bhÄveyyÄsi, upekkhÄsahagatampi bhÄveyyÄsi. When this immersion is developed and cultivated in this way, you should develop it while placing the mind and keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind, merely keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind or keeping it connected. You should develop it with rapture. You should develop it without rapture. You should develop it with pleasure. You should develop it with equanimity.
Yato kho, te bhikkhu, ayaį¹ samÄdhi evaį¹ bhÄvito hoti subhÄvito, tato te, bhikkhu, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: When this immersion is well developed in this way, you should train like this:
ākaruį¹Ä me cetovimutti ā¦ āI will develop the heartās release by compassion ā¦ā ā¦
muditÄ me cetovimutti ā¦ āI will develop the heartās release by rejoicing ā¦ā ā¦
upekkhÄ me cetovimutti bhÄvitÄ bhavissati bahulÄ«katÄ yÄnÄ«katÄ vatthukatÄ anuį¹į¹hitÄ paricitÄ susamÄraddhÄāti. āI will develop the heartās release by equanimity. Iāll cultivate it, make it my vehicle and my basis, keep it up, consolidate it, and properly implement it.ā

Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaį¹ samÄdhi evaį¹ bhÄvito hoti subhÄvito, tato tvaį¹, bhikkhu, yena yeneva gagghasi phÄsuį¹yeva gagghasi, yattha yattha į¹hassasi phÄsuį¹yeva į¹hassasi, yattha yattha nisÄ«dissasi phÄsuį¹yeva nisÄ«dissasi, yattha yattha seyyaį¹ kappessasi phÄsuį¹yeva seyyaį¹ kappessasÄ«āti. When this immersion is well developed in this way, wherever you walk, youāll walk comfortably. Wherever you stand, youāll stand comfortably. Wherever you sit, youāll sit comfortably. Wherever you lie down, youāll lie down comfortably.ā
Atha kho so bhikkhu bhagavatÄ iminÄ ovÄdena ovadito uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ pakkÄmi. When that mendicant had been given this advice by the Buddha, he got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.
Atha kho so bhikkhu eko vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirassevaāyassatthÄya kulaputtÄ sammadeva agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraį¹ābrahmacariyapariyosÄnaį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja vihÄsi. Then that mendicant, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.
āKhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti abbhaƱƱÄsi. He understood: āRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā
AƱƱataro ca pana so bhikkhu arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti. And that mendicant became one of the perfected.
