Saį¹…khittasutta A Teaching in Brief

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,

ā€œsādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹ desetu, yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvā eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanā€ti. ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iā€™ve heard it, Iā€™ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€

ā€œEvamevaį¹ panidhekacce moghapurisā mamaƱƱeva ajjhesanti. ā€œThis is exactly how some silly people ask me for something.

Dhamme ca bhāsite mamaƱƱeva anubandhitabbaį¹ maƱƱantÄ«ā€ti. But when the teaching has been explained they think only of following me around.ā€

ā€œDesetu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹, desetu sugato saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹. Appeva nāmāhaį¹ bhagavato bhāsitassa atthaį¹ ājāneyyaį¹, appeva nāmāhaį¹ bhagavato bhāsitassa dāyādo assanā€ti. ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief! May the Holy One teach me the Dhamma in brief! Hopefully I can understand the meaning of what the Buddha says! Hopefully I can be an heir of the Buddhaā€™s teaching!ā€

ā€œTasmātiha te, bhikkhu, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: ā€œWell then, mendicant, you should train like this:

ā€˜ajjhattaį¹ me cittaį¹ į¹­hitaį¹ bhavissati susaį¹‡į¹­hitaį¹, na ca uppannā pāpakā akusalā dhammā cittaį¹ pariyādāya į¹­hassantÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜My mind will be steady and well settled internally. And bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen will not occupy my mind.ā€™

EvaƱhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s how you should train.

Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ajjhattaį¹ cittaį¹ į¹­hitaį¹ hoti susaį¹‡į¹­hitaį¹, na ca uppannā pāpakā akusalā dhammā cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hanti, tato te, bhikkhu, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: When your mind is steady and well settled internally, and bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen donā€™t occupy your mind, then you should train like this:

ā€˜mettā me cetovimutti bhāvitā bhavissati bahulÄ«katā yānÄ«katā vatthukatā anuį¹­į¹­hitā paricitā susamāraddhāā€™ti. ā€˜I will develop the heartā€™s release by love. Iā€™ll cultivate it, make it my vehicle and my basis, keep it up, consolidate it, and properly implement it.ā€™

EvaƱhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s how you should train.

Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaį¹ samādhi evaį¹ bhāvito hoti bahulÄ«kato, tato tvaį¹, bhikkhu, imaį¹ samādhiį¹ savitakkampi savicāraį¹ bhāveyyāsi, avitakkampi vicāramattaį¹ bhāveyyāsi, avitakkampi avicāraį¹ bhāveyyāsi, sappÄ«tikampi bhāveyyāsi, nippÄ«tikampi bhāveyyāsi, sātasahagatampi bhāveyyāsi, upekkhāsahagatampi bhāveyyāsi. When this immersion is developed and cultivated in this way, you should develop it while placing the mind and keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind, merely keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind or keeping it connected. You should develop it with rapture. You should develop it without rapture. You should develop it with pleasure. You should develop it with equanimity.

Yato kho, te bhikkhu, ayaį¹ samādhi evaį¹ bhāvito hoti subhāvito, tato te, bhikkhu, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: When this immersion is well developed in this way, you should train like this:

ā€˜karuį¹‡Ä me cetovimutti ā€¦ ā€˜I will develop the heartā€™s release by compassion ā€¦ā€™ ā€¦

muditā me cetovimutti ā€¦ ā€˜I will develop the heartā€™s release by rejoicing ā€¦ā€™ ā€¦

upekkhā me cetovimutti bhāvitā bhavissati bahulÄ«katā yānÄ«katā vatthukatā anuį¹­į¹­hitā paricitā susamāraddhāā€™ti. ā€˜I will develop the heartā€™s release by equanimity. Iā€™ll cultivate it, make it my vehicle and my basis, keep it up, consolidate it, and properly implement it.ā€™

EvaƱhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s how you should train.

ā€˜kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharissāmi ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassanā€™ti. ā€˜Iā€™ll meditate observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.ā€™

EvaƱhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s how you should train.

ā€˜vedanāsu ā€¦ ā€˜Iā€™ll meditate on an aspect of feelings ā€¦ā€™ ā€¦

citte ā€¦ ā€˜Iā€™ll meditate on an aspect of the mind ā€¦ā€™ ā€¦

dhammesu dhammānupassÄ« viharissāmi ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassanā€™ti. ā€˜Iā€™ll meditate on an aspect of principlesā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.ā€™

EvaƱhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s how you should train.

When this immersion is developed and cultivated in this way, you should develop it while placing the mind and keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind, merely keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind or keeping it connected. You should develop it with rapture. You should develop it without rapture. You should develop it with pleasure. You should develop it with equanimity.

Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaį¹ samādhi evaį¹ bhāvito hoti subhāvito, tato tvaį¹, bhikkhu, yena yeneva gagghasi phāsuį¹yeva gagghasi, yattha yattha į¹­hassasi phāsuį¹yeva į¹­hassasi, yattha yattha nisÄ«dissasi phāsuį¹yeva nisÄ«dissasi, yattha yattha seyyaį¹ kappessasi phāsuį¹yeva seyyaį¹ kappessasÄ«ā€ti. When this immersion is well developed in this way, wherever you walk, youā€™ll walk comfortably. Wherever you stand, youā€™ll stand comfortably. Wherever you sit, youā€™ll sit comfortably. Wherever you lie down, youā€™ll lie down comfortably.ā€

Atha kho so bhikkhu bhagavatā iminā ovādena ovadito uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā padakkhiį¹‡aį¹ katvā pakkāmi. When that mendicant had been given this advice by the Buddha, he got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.

Atha kho so bhikkhu eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirassevaā€”yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraį¹ā€”brahmacariyapariyosānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi. Then that mendicant, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

ā€œKhÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€ti abbhaƱƱāsi. He understood: ā€œRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā€

AƱƱataro ca pana so bhikkhu arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti. And that mendicant became one of the perfected.
