Devatāsutta A Deity

ā€œImaƱca, bhikkhave, rattiį¹ sambahulā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaį¹‡į¹‡Ä kevalakappaį¹ jetavanaį¹ obhāsetvā yenāhaį¹ tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā maį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­haį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho, bhikkhave, tā devatā maį¹ etadavocuį¹: ā€œMendicants, tonight, several glorious deities, lighting up the entire Jetaā€™s Grove, came to me, bowed, stood to one side, and said to me:

ā€˜upasaį¹…kamiį¹su no, bhante, pubbe manussabhÅ«tānaį¹ pabbajitā agārāni. ā€˜Sir, formerly when we were human beings, renunciates came to our homes.

Te mayaį¹, bhante, paccuį¹­į¹­himha, no ca kho abhivādimha. We politely rose for them, but we didnā€™t bow.

Tā mayaį¹, bhante, aparipuį¹‡į¹‡akammantā vippaį¹­isāriniyo paccānutāpiniyo hÄ«naį¹ kāyaį¹ upapannāā€™ti. And so, having not fulfilled our duty, full of remorse and regret, we were reborn in a lesser realm.ā€™

Aparāpi maį¹, bhikkhave, sambahulā devatā upasaį¹…kamitvā etadavocuį¹: Then several other deities came to me and said:

ā€˜upasaį¹…kamiį¹su no, bhante, pubbe manussabhÅ«tānaį¹ pabbajitā agārāni. ā€˜Sir, formerly when we were human beings, renunciates came to our homes.

Te mayaį¹, bhante, paccuį¹­į¹­himha abhivādimha, no ca tesaį¹ āsanaį¹ adamha. We politely rose for them and bowed, but we didnā€™t offer a seat.

Tā mayaį¹, bhante, aparipuį¹‡į¹‡akammantā vippaį¹­isāriniyo paccānutāpiniyo hÄ«naį¹ kāyaį¹ upapannāā€™ti. And so, having not fulfilled our duty, full of remorse and regret, we were reborn in a lesser realm.ā€™

yathāsatti yathābalaį¹ saį¹vibhajimha, no ca kho upanisÄ«dimha dhammassavanāya ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜ā€¦ we didnā€™t sit nearby to listen to the teachings. ā€¦ā€™

upanisÄ«dimha dhammassavanāya, no ca kho ohitasotā dhammaį¹ suį¹‡imha ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜ā€¦ we didnā€™t actively listen to the teachings. ā€¦ā€™

ohitasotā ca dhammaį¹ suį¹‡imha, no ca kho sutvā dhammaį¹ dhārayimha ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜ā€¦ we didnā€™t memorize the teachings. ā€¦ā€™

sutvā ca dhammaį¹ dhārayimha, no ca kho dhātānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ atthaį¹ upaparikkhimha ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜ā€¦ we didnā€™t examine the meaning of teachings weā€™d memorized. ā€¦ā€™

dhātānaƱca dhammānaį¹ atthaį¹ upaparikkhimha, no ca kho atthamaƱƱāya dhammamaƱƱāya dhammānudhammaį¹ paį¹­ipajjimha. ā€˜ā€¦ not having understood the meaning and the teaching, we didnā€™t practice accordingly.

Tā mayaį¹, bhante, aparipuį¹‡į¹‡akammantā vippaį¹­isāriniyo paccānutāpiniyo hÄ«naį¹ kāyaį¹ upapannāā€™ti. And so, having not fulfilled our duty, full of remorse and regret, we were reborn in a lesser realm.ā€™

Te mayaį¹, bhante, paccuį¹­į¹­himha abhivādimha, āsanaį¹ adamha, yathāsatti yathābalaį¹ saį¹vibhajimha, upanisÄ«dimha dhammassavanāya, ohitasotā ca dhammaį¹ suį¹‡imha, sutvā ca dhammaį¹ dhārayimha, dhātānaƱca dhammānaį¹ atthaį¹ upaparikkhimha, atthamaƱƱāya dhammamaƱƱāya dhammānudhammaį¹ paį¹­ipajjimha. We politely rose, bowed, and offered them a seat. We shared as best we could. We sat nearby to listen to the teachings, lent an ear, memorized them, and examined their meaning. Understanding the teaching and the meaning we practiced accordingly.

Tā mayaį¹, bhante, paripuį¹‡į¹‡akammantā avippaį¹­isāriniyo apaccānutāpiniyo paį¹‡Ä«taį¹ kāyaį¹ upapannāā€™ti. And so, having fulfilled our duty, free of remorse and regret, we were reborn in a superior realm.ā€™

Etāni, bhikkhave, rukkhamÅ«lāni etāni suƱƱāgārāni. Jhāyatha, bhikkhave, mā pamādattha, mā pacchā vippaį¹­isārino ahuvattha seyyathāpi tā purimikā devatāā€ti. Here, mendicants, are these roots of trees, and here are these empty huts. Practice absorption, mendicants! Donā€™t be negligent! Donā€™t regret it later, like those former deities.ā€
