āImaƱca, bhikkhave, rattiį¹ sambahulÄ devatÄ abhikkantÄya rattiyÄ abhikkantavaį¹į¹Ä kevalakappaį¹ jetavanaį¹ obhÄsetvÄ yenÄhaį¹ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ maį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ į¹hitÄ kho, bhikkhave, tÄ devatÄ maį¹ etadavocuį¹: āMendicants, tonight, several glorious deities, lighting up the entire Jetaās Grove, came to me, bowed, stood to one side, and said to me:
āupasaį¹
kamiį¹su no, bhante, pubbe manussabhÅ«tÄnaį¹ pabbajitÄ agÄrÄni. āSir, formerly when we were human beings, renunciates came to our homes.
Te mayaį¹, bhante, paccuį¹į¹himha, no ca kho abhivÄdimha. We politely rose for them, but we didnāt bow.
TÄ mayaį¹, bhante, aparipuį¹į¹akammantÄ vippaį¹isÄriniyo paccÄnutÄpiniyo hÄ«naį¹ kÄyaį¹ upapannÄāti. And so, having not fulfilled our duty, full of remorse and regret, we were reborn in a lesser realm.ā
AparÄpi maį¹, bhikkhave, sambahulÄ devatÄ upasaį¹
kamitvÄ etadavocuį¹: Then several other deities came to me and said:
āupasaį¹
kamiį¹su no, bhante, pubbe manussabhÅ«tÄnaį¹ pabbajitÄ agÄrÄni. āSir, formerly when we were human beings, renunciates came to our homes.
Te mayaį¹, bhante, paccuį¹į¹himha abhivÄdimha, no ca tesaį¹ Äsanaį¹ adamha. We politely rose for them and bowed, but we didnāt offer a seat.
TÄ mayaį¹, bhante, aparipuį¹į¹akammantÄ vippaį¹isÄriniyo paccÄnutÄpiniyo hÄ«naį¹ kÄyaį¹ upapannÄāti. And so, having not fulfilled our duty, full of remorse and regret, we were reborn in a lesser realm.ā

upanisÄ«dimha dhammassavanÄya, no ca kho ohitasotÄ dhammaį¹ suį¹imha ā¦peā¦ āā¦ we didnāt actively listen to the teachings. ā¦ā
ohitasotÄ ca dhammaį¹ suį¹imha, no ca kho sutvÄ dhammaį¹ dhÄrayimha ā¦peā¦ āā¦ we didnāt memorize the teachings. ā¦ā
sutvÄ ca dhammaį¹ dhÄrayimha, no ca kho dhÄtÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ atthaį¹ upaparikkhimha ā¦peā¦ āā¦ we didnāt examine the meaning of teachings weād memorized. ā¦ā
dhÄtÄnaƱca dhammÄnaį¹ atthaį¹ upaparikkhimha, no ca kho atthamaƱƱÄya dhammamaƱƱÄya dhammÄnudhammaį¹ paį¹ipajjimha. āā¦ not having understood the meaning and the teaching, we didnāt practice accordingly.
TÄ mayaį¹, bhante, aparipuį¹į¹akammantÄ vippaį¹isÄriniyo paccÄnutÄpiniyo hÄ«naį¹ kÄyaį¹ upapannÄāti. And so, having not fulfilled our duty, full of remorse and regret, we were reborn in a lesser realm.ā

Te mayaį¹, bhante, paccuį¹į¹himha abhivÄdimha, Äsanaį¹ adamha, yathÄsatti yathÄbalaį¹ saį¹vibhajimha, upanisÄ«dimha dhammassavanÄya, ohitasotÄ ca dhammaį¹ suį¹imha, sutvÄ ca dhammaį¹ dhÄrayimha, dhÄtÄnaƱca dhammÄnaį¹ atthaį¹ upaparikkhimha, atthamaƱƱÄya dhammamaƱƱÄya dhammÄnudhammaį¹ paį¹ipajjimha. We politely rose, bowed, and offered them a seat. We shared as best we could. We sat nearby to listen to the teachings, lent an ear, memorized them, and examined their meaning. Understanding the teaching and the meaning we practiced accordingly.
TÄ mayaį¹, bhante, paripuį¹į¹akammantÄ avippaį¹isÄriniyo apaccÄnutÄpiniyo paį¹Ä«taį¹ kÄyaį¹ upapannÄāti. And so, having fulfilled our duty, free of remorse and regret, we were reborn in a superior realm.ā
EtÄni, bhikkhave, rukkhamÅ«lÄni etÄni suƱƱÄgÄrÄni. JhÄyatha, bhikkhave, mÄ pamÄdattha, mÄ pacchÄ vippaį¹isÄrino ahuvattha seyyathÄpi tÄ purimikÄ devatÄāti. Here, mendicants, are these roots of trees, and here are these empty huts. Practice absorption, mendicants! Donāt be negligent! Donāt regret it later, like those former deities.ā
