AƱƱatarabhikkhusutta A Mendicant

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,

ā€œsādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹ desetu; ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iā€™ve heard it, Iā€™ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€

yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvā eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho, appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanā€ti.

ā€œYaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, anuseti, tena saį¹…khaį¹ gacchati; ā€œMendicant, youā€™re defined by what you have an underlying tendency for.

yaį¹ nānuseti, na tena saį¹…khaį¹ gacchatÄ«ā€ti. Youā€™re not defined by what you have no underlying tendency for.ā€

ā€œAƱƱātaį¹, bhagavā, aƱƱātaį¹, sugatāā€ti. ā€œUnderstood, Blessed One! Understood, Holy One!ā€

ā€œYathā kathaį¹ pana tvaį¹, bhikkhu, mayā saį¹…khittena bhāsitassa vitthārena atthaį¹ ājānāsÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut how do you see the detailed meaning of my brief statement?ā€

ā€œRÅ«paƱce, bhante, anuseti tena saį¹…khaį¹ gacchati. ā€œIf you have an underlying tendency for form, youā€™re defined by that.

Imassa kho, bhikkhu, mayā saį¹…khittena, bhāsitassa evaį¹ vitthārena attho daį¹­į¹­habboā€ti. This is how to understand the detailed meaning of what I said in brief.ā€

Atha kho so bhikkhu bhagavato bhāsitaį¹ abhinanditvā anumoditvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā padakkhiį¹‡aį¹ katvā pakkāmi. And then that mendicant approved and agreed with what the Buddha said. He got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.

Atha kho so bhikkhu eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirassevaā€”yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraį¹ā€”brahmacariyapariyosānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi. Then that mendicant, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

ā€œKhÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€ti abbhaƱƱāsi. He understood: ā€œRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā€

AƱƱataro ca pana so bhikkhu arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti. And that mendicant became one of the perfected.
