Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Änanda said to the Buddha:
āasoko nÄma, bhante, bhikkhu kÄlaį¹
kato; āSir, the monk named Asoka has passed away.
tassa kÄ gati, ko abhisamparÄyo? Where has he been reborn in his next life?
AsokÄ nÄma, bhante, bhikkhunÄ« kÄlaį¹
katÄ ā¦pe⦠The nun named AsokÄ,
asoko nÄma, bhante, upÄsako kÄlaį¹
kato ā¦pe⦠the layman named Asoka,
asokÄ nÄma, bhante, upÄsikÄ kÄlaį¹
katÄ; and the laywoman named AsokÄ have passed away.
tassÄ kÄ gati, ko abhisamparÄyoāti? Where have they been reborn in the next life?ā

kato ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja vihÄsi ā¦pe⦠āÄnanda, the monk Asoka passed away having realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life ā¦

yena samannÄgato ariyasÄvako Äkaį¹
khamÄno attanÄva attÄnaį¹ byÄkareyya: A noble disciple who has this may declare of themselves:
ākhÄ«į¹anirayomhi khÄ«į¹atiracchÄnayoni khÄ«į¹apettivisayo khÄ«į¹ÄpÄyaduggativinipÄto, sotÄpannohamasmi avinipÄtadhammo niyato sambodhiparÄyaį¹oāāti. āIāve finished with rebirth in hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. Iāve finished with all places of loss, bad places, the underworld. I am a stream-enterer! Iām not liable to be reborn in the underworld, and am bound for awakening.āā
