The Chapter on Happiness
64
“Dvemāni, bhikkhave, sukhāni.
“There are, mendicants, these two kinds of happiness.
Katamāni dve?
What two?
Gihisukhañca pabbajitasukhañca.
The happiness of laypeople, and the happiness of renunciates.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni.
These are the two kinds of happiness.
Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ pabbajitasukhan”ti.
The better of these two kinds of happiness is the happiness of renunciates.”

“There are, mendicants, these two kinds of happiness.

What two?
Kāmasukhañca nekkhammasukhañca.
Sensual happiness and the happiness of renunciation.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni.
These are the two kinds of happiness.
Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ nekkhammasukhan”ti.
The better of these two kinds of happiness is the happiness of renunciation.”

Upadhisukhañca nirupadhisukhañca.
The happiness of attachments, and the happiness of no attachments.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni.
These are the two kinds of happiness.
Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ nirupadhisukhan”ti.
The better of these two kinds of happiness is the happiness of no attachments.”

Sāsavasukhañca anāsavasukhañca.
Defiled happiness and undefiled happiness.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni.
These are the two kinds of happiness.
Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ anāsavasukhan”ti.
The better of these two kinds of happiness is the happiness of no defilements.”

Sāmisañca sukhaṁ nirāmisañca sukhaṁ.
Happiness of the flesh and happiness not of the flesh.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni.
These are the two kinds of happiness.
Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ nirāmisaṁ sukhan”ti.
The better of these two kinds of happiness is happiness not of the flesh.”

Ariyasukhañca anariyasukhañca.
Noble happiness and ignoble happiness.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni.
These are the two kinds of happiness.
Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ ariyasukhan”ti.
The better of these two kinds of happiness is noble happiness.”

Kāyikañca sukhaṁ cetasikañca sukhaṁ.
Physical happiness and mental happiness.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni.
These are the two kinds of happiness.
Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ cetasikaṁ sukhan”ti.
The better of these two kinds of happiness is mental happiness.”

Sappītikañca sukhaṁ nippītikañca sukhaṁ.
Happiness with rapture and happiness free of rapture.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni.
These are the two kinds of happiness.
Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ nippītikaṁ sukhan”ti.
The better of these two kinds of happiness is happiness free of rapture.”

Sātasukhañca upekkhāsukhañca.
Happiness with pleasure and happiness with equanimity.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni.
These are the two kinds of happiness.
Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ upekkhāsukhan”ti.
The better of these two kinds of happiness is happiness with equanimity.”

Samādhisukhañca asamādhisukhañca.
The happiness of immersion and the happiness without immersion.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni.
These are the two kinds of happiness.
Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ samādhisukhan”ti.
The better of these two kinds of happiness is the happiness of immersion.”

Sappītikārammaṇañca sukhaṁ nippītikārammaṇañca sukhaṁ.
Happiness that relies on rapture and happiness that relies on freedom from rapture.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni.
These are the two kinds of happiness.
Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ nippītikārammaṇaṁ sukhan”ti.
The better of these two kinds of happiness is happiness that relies on freedom from rapture.”

Happiness that relies on pleasure and happiness that relies on equanimity.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ upekkhārammaṇaṁ sukhan”ti.

Rūpārammaṇañca sukhaṁ arūpārammaṇañca sukhaṁ.
Happiness that relies on form and happiness that relies on the formless.

These are the two kinds of happiness.
Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ arūpārammaṇaṁ sukhan”ti.
The better of these two kinds of happiness is happiness that relies on the formless.”
