Akitticariya

Akitti’s Conduct

Namo tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammāsambuddhassa.
Homage to that Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha!

“Kappe ca satasahasse,
“For a hundred thousand eons

caturo ca asaṅkhiye;
and four incalculable ages,

Etthantare yaṁ caritaṁ,
all my conduct in that period

sabbaṁ taṁ bodhipācanaṁ.
ripens in awakening.

Atītakappe caritaṁ,
Setting aside my conduct

ṭhapayitvā bhavābhave;
in past eons through different lives,

Imamhi kappe caritaṁ,
I shall speak of my conduct

pavakkhissaṁ suṇohi me.
in this eon, hear me.

Yadā ahaṁ brahāraññe,
When I lived having plunged

suññe vipinakānane;
into the formidable jungle

Ajjhogāhetvā viharāmi,
of empty thickets and glades,

akitti nāma tāpaso.
my name was Akitti the mortifier.

Tadā maṁ tapatejena,
Then, burned by the fires of my mortification,

santatto tidivābhibhū;
the sovereign of the heaven of the Thirty-three,

Dhārento brāhmaṇavaṇṇaṁ,
came to me for alms

bhikkhāya maṁ upāgami.
in the form of a brahmin.

Pavanā ābhataṁ paṇṇaṁ,
I had gathered leaves from the forest

atelañca aloṇikaṁ;
without oil or salt,

Mama dvāre ṭhitaṁ disvā,
and seeing him standing at my door,

sakaṭāhena ākiriṁ.
I placed them in his pot.

Tassa datvānahaṁ paṇṇaṁ,
After giving him the leaves

nikkujjitvāna bhājanaṁ;
I turned over my plate,

Punesanaṁ jahitvāna,
and having given up on seeking more food,

pāvisiṁ paṇṇasālakaṁ.
I entered my hut of leaves.

Dutiyampi tatiyampi,
A second and a third time

upagañchi mamantikaṁ;
he came to me.

Akampito anolaggo,
Undisturbed, ungrasping,

evamevamadāsahaṁ.
I gave in just the same way.

Na me tappaccayā atthi,
That is the reason why

sarīrasmiṁ vivaṇṇiyaṁ;
my body is not discolored.

Pītisukhena ratiyā,
In rapture and bliss free of relishing

vītināmemi taṁ divaṁ.
I spend the day.

Yadi māsampi dvemāsaṁ,
If even for a month or two

dakkhiṇeyyaṁ varaṁ labhe;
I were to find a worthy recipient,

Akampito anolīno,
undisturbed, unattached,

dadeyyaṁ dānamuttamaṁ.
I would give the supreme gift.

Na tassa dānaṁ dadamāno,
While giving him that gift

yasaṁ lābhañca patthayiṁ;
I did not wish for fame or profit.

Sabbaññutaṁ patthayāno,
Wishing for omniscience

tāni kammāni ācarin”ti.
I performed those deeds.”

Akitticariyaṁ paṭhamaṁ.
