Mahāgovinda’s Conduct
“Punāparaṁ yadā homi,
“Then again when I was
sattarājapurohito;
high priest for seven kings,
Pūjito naradevehi,
I was venerated by men and gods
mahāgovindabrāhmaṇo.
as the brahmin Mahāgovinda.
Tadāhaṁ sattarajjesu,
Then in all seven kingdoms
Yaṁ me āsi upāyanaṁ;
what I receieved as tribute
Tena demi mahādānaṁ,
I used to give a great gift
Akkhobbhaṁ sāgarūpamaṁ.
unwavering as the ocean.
Na me dessaṁ dhanaṁ dhaññaṁ,
It was not because I disliked riches or grain,
Napi natthi nicayo mayi;
or because I had a store set aside,
Sabbaññutaṁ piyaṁ mayhaṁ,
but because omniscience is precious to me,
Tasmā demi varaṁ dhanan”ti.
that is why I gave such fine riches.”
Mahāgovindacariyaṁ pañcamaṁ.
