14. The Buddhas
Chapter on the Buddha

Māradhītaravatthu

Yassa jitaṁ nāvajīyati,
He whose victory may not be undone,
One whose victory does not diminish,

Jitaṁ yassa noyāti koci loke;
a victory unrivaled in all the world;
whose victory cannot be removed by anyone in the world,

Taṁ buddhamanantagocaraṁ,
by what track would you trace that Buddha,
the domain of that Awakened One is infinite -

Apadaṁ kena padena nessatha.
who leaves no track in his infinite range?
No one can lead that one astray.

Yassa jālinī visattikā,
Of craving, the weaver, the clinger, he has none:
One who is not entangled or stuck,

Taṇhā natthi kuhiñci netave;
so where can he be traced?
in whom no craving can be found,

Taṁ buddhamanantagocaraṁ,
By what track would you trace that Buddha,
the domain of that Awakened One is infinite -

Apadaṁ kena padena nessatha.
who leaves no track in his infinite range?
No one can lead that one astray.

Devorohaṇavatthu

Ye jhānapasutā dhīrā,
The attentive intent on absorption,
They are steadfast, committed to Jhāna,

nekkhammūpasame ratā;
who love the peace of renunciation,
appreciate the peacefulness of renunciation,

Devāpi tesaṁ pihayanti,
the Buddhas, ever mindful,
and are envied even by the angels -

sambuddhānaṁ satīmataṁ.
are envied by even the gods.
those who are mindful and fully Awakened.

Erakapattanāgarājavatthu

Kiccho manussapaṭilābho,
It’s hard to gain a human birth;
It is hard to become a human,

kicchaṁ maccāna jīvitaṁ;
the life of mortals is hard;
it is hard to live a mortal life,

Kicchaṁ saddhammassavanaṁ,
it’s hard to hear the true teaching;
it is hard to hear the true Dhamma,

kiccho buddhānamuppādo.
the arising of Buddhas is hard.
it is hard to encounter an Awakened One.

Ānandattherapañhavatthu

Sabbapāpassa akaraṇaṁ,
Not to do any evil;
Not doing anything evil,

kusalassa upasampadā;
to embrace the good;
commitment to the wholesome,

Sacittapariyodapanaṁ,
to purify one’s mind:
and cleansing one's own mind -

etaṁ buddhāna sāsanaṁ.
this is the instruction of the Buddhas.
this is the teaching of the Awakened Ones.

Khantī paramaṁ tapo titikkhā,
Patient acceptance is the ultimate fervor.
Endurance is the highest austerity,

Nibbānaṁ paramaṁ vadanti buddhā;
Extinguishment is the ultimate, say the Buddhas.
Nibbāna is the highest, according to those who are Awakened.

Na hi pabbajito parūpaghātī,
No true renunciate injures another,
A renunciant does not harm others,

Na samaṇo hoti paraṁ viheṭhayanto.
nor does an ascetic hurt another.
a contemplative does not oppress others.

Anūpavādo anūpaghāto,
Not speaking ill nor doing harm;
Not insulting, not harming,

Pātimokkhe ca saṁvaro;
restraint in the monastic code;
self-restraint in accordance with the Pātimokkha,

Mattaññutā ca bhattasmiṁ,
moderation in eating;
Knowing the right amount when eating,

Pantañca sayanāsanaṁ;
staying in remote lodgings;
sitting and sleeping in a secluded place,

Adhicitte ca āyogo,
commitment to the higher mind—
and commitment to improving the mind -

Etaṁ buddhāna sāsanaṁ.
this is the instruction of the Buddhas.
this is the teaching of the Awakened Ones.

Anabhiratabhikkhuvatthu

Na kahāpaṇavassena,
Even if it were raining money,
Not even with a rain of money

titti kāmesu vijjati;
you’d not be sated in sensual pleasures.
can one be sated when it comes to sensuality.

Appassādā dukhā kāmā,
An astute person understands that sensual pleasures
There is little gratification in sensuality, it is unsatisfying;

iti viññāya paṇḍito.
offer little gratification and much suffering.
this is what the wise understand.

Api dibbesu kāmesu,
Thus they find no delight
Even in heavenly sensuality

ratiṁ so nādhigacchati;
even in celestial pleasures.
one cannot find satisfaction.

Taṇhakkhayarato hoti,
A disciple of the fully awakened Buddha
But there is satisfaction in the elimination of craving

sammāsambuddhasāvako.
delights in the ending of craving.
for a disciple of the Fully Awakened One.

Aggidattabrāhmaṇavatthu

Bahuṁ ve saraṇaṁ yanti,
So many go for refuge
They go to many places for refuge -

pabbatāni vanāni ca;
to mountains and forest groves,
mountains, groves,

Ārāmarukkhacetyāni,
to tree-shrines in tended parks;
forest shrines -

manussā bhayatajjitā.
those people are driven by fear.
people who are struck by fear.

Netaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ,
But such refuge is no sanctuary,
But that is not a secure refuge,

netaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ;
it is no supreme refuge.
that is not the ultimate refuge;

Netaṁ saraṇamāgamma,
By going to that refuge,
that is not a refuge

sabbadukkhā pamuccati.
you’re not released from all suffering.
which brings freedom from all suffering.

Yo ca buddhañca dhammañca,
One gone for refuge to the Buddha,
But one who has gone for refuge

saṅghañca saraṇaṁ gato;
to his teaching and to the Saṅgha,
to the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha,

Cattāri ariyasaccāni,
sees the four noble truths
and who sees the Four Noble Truths

sammappaññāya passati.
with right understanding:
with correct wisdom -

Dukkhaṁ dukkhasamuppādaṁ,
suffering, suffering’s origin,
suffering, the origin of suffering,

dukkhassa ca atikkamaṁ;
suffering’s transcendence,
the transcending of suffering,

Ariyaṁ caṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ,
and the noble eightfold path
and the Noble Eightfold Path

dukkhūpasamagāminaṁ.
that leads to the stilling of suffering.
which leads to the pacification of suffering -

Etaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ,
Such refuge is a sanctuary,
this is a secure refuge,

etaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ;
it is the supreme refuge.
this is the ultimate refuge.

Etaṁ saraṇamāgamma,
By going to that refuge,
This is the refuge

sabbadukkhā pamuccati.
you’re released from all suffering.
which brings freedom from all suffering.

Ānandattherapañhavatthu

Dullabho purisājañño,
It’s hard to find a thoroughbred man:
It is hard to find a high-quality person;

na so sabbattha jāyati;
they’re not born just anywhere.
they are not born everywhere.

Yattha so jāyati dhīro,
A family where that sage is born
Wherever a steadfast person is born,

taṁ kulaṁ sukhamedhati.
prospers in happiness.
their family grows in happiness.

Sambahulabhikkhuvatthu

Sukho buddhānamuppādo,
Happy, the arising of Buddhas!
Happy is the arising of Awakened Ones,

sukhā saddhammadesanā;
Happy, the teaching of Dhamma!
happy is the teaching of the true Dhamma,

Sukhā saṅghassa sāmaggī,
Happy is the harmony of the Saṅgha,
happy is the harmony of the Sangha,

samaggānaṁ tapo sukho.
and the striving of the harmonious is happy.
happy is the austerity of those on the same Path.

Kassapadasabalassasuvaṇṇacetiyavatthu

Pūjārahe pūjayato,
When a person venerates the worthy—
One who honors those worthy of honor -

buddhe yadi va sāvake;
the Buddha or his disciple,
Awakened Ones or their disciples,

Papañcasamatikkante,
who have transcended proliferation,
those who have transcended complication

tiṇṇasokapariddave.
and have left behind grief and lamentation,
and gone beyond sorrow and grief,

Te tādise pūjayato,
quenched, fearing nothing from any quarter—
who have reached Nibbāna,

nibbute akutobhaye;
the merit of one venerating such as these,
and are fearless -

Na sakkā puññaṁ saṅkhātuṁ,
cannot be calculated by anyone,
it is not possible to calculate the merit

imettamapi kenaci.
saying it is just this much.
of one who honors such beings.

Buddhavaggo cuddasamo.

Paṭhamabhāṇavāraṁ.
