1. Offenses by body, etc.
Kati āpattiyo kāyikā,
“How many offenses are there by body?
Kati vācasikā katā;
How many by speech?
Chādentassa kati āpattiyo,
How many offenses for concealing?
Kati saṁsaggapaccayā.
How many on account of contact?”
Chāpattiyo kāyikā,
“There are six offenses by body,
Cha vācasikā katā;
Six by speech;
Chādentassa tisso āpattiyo,
Three for concealing,
Pañca saṁsaggapaccayā.
And five on account of contact.”
Aruṇugge kati āpattiyo,
“How many offenses are there at dawn?
Kati yāvatatiyakā;
How many after the third announcement?
Katettha aṭṭha vatthukā,
How many here have eight parts?
Katihi sabbasaṅgaho.
Through how many are they all included?”
Aruṇugge tisso āpattiyo,
“There are three offenses at dawn,
Dve yāvatatiyakā;
Two after the third announcement;
Ekettha aṭṭha vatthukā,
One here has eight parts,
Ekena sabbasaṅgaho.
They are all included through one.”
Vinayassa kati mūlāni,
“How many sources are there of the Monastic Law
Yāni buddhena paññattā;
That were laid down by the Buddha?
Vinayagarukā kati vuttā,
How many are said to be heavy in the Monastic Law?
Duṭṭhullacchādanā kati.
How many kinds of concealing are there of grave offenses?”
Vinayassa dve mūlāni,
“There are two sources of the Monastic Law
yāni buddhena paññattā;
That were laid down by the Buddha.
Vinayagarukā dve vuttā,
Two are said to be heavy in the Monastic Law.
dve duṭṭhullacchādanā.
There are two kinds of concealing of grave offenses.”
Gāmantare kati āpattiyo,
“How many offenses are there concerning the next village?
Kati nadipārapaccayā;
How many offenses are there on account of crossing a river?
Katimaṁsesu thullaccayaṁ,
How many serious offenses are there in relation to meat?
Katimaṁsesu dukkaṭaṁ.
How many offenses of wrong conduct are there in relation to meat?”
Gāmantare catasso āpattiyo,
“There are four offenses concerning the next village,
Catasso nadipārapaccayā;
And four on account of crossing a river.
Ekamaṁse thullaccayaṁ,
There is one serious offense in relation to meat,
Navamaṁsesu dukkaṭaṁ.
And nine offenses of wrong conduct.”
Kati vācasikā rattiṁ,
“How many offenses are there by speech at night?
Kati vācasikā divā;
How many offenses are there by speech by day?
Dadamānassa kati āpattiyo,
How many offenses are there for giving?
Paṭiggaṇhantassa kittakā.
And how many for receiving?”
Dve vācasikā rattiṁ,
“There are two offenses by speech at night,
Dve vācasikā divā;
And there are two by speech by day.
Dadamānassa tisso āpattiyo,
There are three offenses for,
Cattāro ca paṭiggahe.
And four for a recipient.”
2. Desanāgāminiyādiāpatti
2. Offenses that are clearable by confession, etc.
Kati desanāgāminiyo,
“How many kinds of offenses are clearable by confession?
Kati sappaṭikammā katā;
How many require amends to be made?
Katettha appaṭikammā vuttā,
How many here do not to require amends,
Buddhenādiccabandhunā.
Said the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?”
Pañca desanāgāminiyo,
“Five kinds are clearable by confession,
Cha sappaṭikammā katā;
Six require amends to be made,
Ekettha appaṭikammā vuttā,
And one does not require amends,
Buddhenādiccabandhunā.
Said the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.”
Vinayagarukā kati vuttā,
“How many are said to be heavy in the Monastic Law,
Kāyavācasikāni ca;
Done by body or speech?
Kati vikāle dhaññaraso,
How many grain juices are allowable at the wrong time?
Kati ñatticatutthena sammuti.
How many appointments are made through one motion and three announcements?”
Vinayagarukā dve vuttā,
“Two are said to be heavy in the Monastic Law,
Kāyavācasikāni ca;
Done by body or speech.
Eko vikāle dhaññaraso,
One grain juice is allowable at the wrong time,
Ekā ñatticatutthena sammuti.
And one appointment is made through one motion and three announcements.
Pārājikā kāyikā kati,
“How many offenses entailing expulsion are done by body?
kati saṁvāsakabhūmiyo;
How many grounds are there for belonging to the same Buddhist sect?
Katinaṁ ratticchedo,
For how many kinds of people are there non-countable days?
paññattā dvaṅgulā kati.
How many rules concern 3.5 centimeters?”
Pārājikā kāyikā dve,
“Two such offenses are done by body,
dve saṁvāsakabhūmiyo;
And there are two grounds for belonging to the same Buddhist sect.
Dvinnaṁ ratticchedo,
There are non-countable days for two kinds of people,
paññattā dvaṅgulā duve.
And two rules concerning 3.5 centimeters.”
Katattānaṁ vadhitvāna,
“How many are there on having struck oneself?
katihi saṅgho bhijjati;
How many kinds of people cause a schism in the Sangha?
Katettha paṭhamāpattikā,
How many here are immediate offenses?
ñattiyā karaṇā kati.
How many ways are there of doing a motion?”
Dve attānaṁ vadhitvāna,
“There are two on having struck oneself,
dvīhi saṅgho bhijjati;
And two kinds cause a schism in the Sangha.
Dvettha paṭhamāpattikā,
Two here are immediate offenses,
ñattiyā karaṇā duve.
And there are two ways of doing a motion.”
Pāṇātipāte kati āpattiyo,
“How many offenses are there for killing living beings?
Vācā pārājikā kati;
How many are the offenses entailing expulsion because of speech?
Obhāsanā kati vuttā,
How many offenses are spoken about indecent speech?
Sañcarittena vā kati.
How many because of matchmaking?”
Pāṇātipāte tisso āpattiyo,
“There are three offenses for killing living beings,
Vācā pārājikā tayo;
And three offenses of expulsion because of speech.
Obhāsanā tayo vuttā,
Three offenses are spoken about indecent speech,
Sañcarittena vā tayo.
And three because of matchmaking.”
Kati puggalā na upasampādetabbā,
“How many kinds of people should not be ordained?
Kati kammānaṁ saṅgahā;
How many things are included in legal procedures?
Nāsitakā kati vuttā,
How many are said to be expelled?
Katinaṁ ekavācikā.
How many are included in a single proclamation?”
Tayo puggalā na upasampādetabbā,
“Three kinds should not be ordained,
Tayo kammānaṁ saṅgahā;
And three things are included in legal procedures.
Nāsitakā tayo vuttā,
Three are said to be expelled,
Tiṇṇannaṁ ekavācikā.
And three are included in a single proclamation.”
Adinnādāne kati āpattiyo,
“How many offenses are there for stealing?
Kati methunapaccayā;
How many on account of sexual intercourse?
Chindantassa kati āpattiyo,
How many offenses for cutting?
Kati chaḍḍitapaccayā.
And how many offenses on account of discarding?”
Adinnādāne tisso āpattiyo,
“There are three offenses for stealing,
Catasso methunapaccayā;
And four on account of sexual intercourse.
Chindantassa tisso āpattiyo,
There are three offenses for cutting,
Pañca chaḍḍitapaccayā.
And five on account of discarding.”
Bhikkhunovādakavaggasmiṁ,
“In the sub-chapter on the instructor of nuns
pācittiyena dukkaṭā;
There are offenses of wrong conduct together with the offense entailing confession.
Katettha navakā vuttā,
How many groups of nine are spoken of there?
katinaṁ cīvarena ca.
And how many about robe-cloth?”
Bhikkhunovādakavaggasmiṁ,
“In the sub-chapter on the instructor of nuns

There is one offense of wrong conduct together with one offense entailing confession.
Caturettha navakā vuttā,
Four groups of nine are spoken of there,
Dvinnaṁ cīvarena ca.
And two are about robe-cloth.”
Bhikkhunīnañca akkhātā,
“How many offenses entailing acknowledgment
Pāṭidesaniyā kati;
Have been declared to the nuns?
Bhuñjantāmakadhaññena,
For one eating raw grain,
Pācittiyena dukkaṭā kati.
How many are the offenses of wrong conduct, together with the offense entailing confession?”
Bhikkhunīnañca akkhātā,

Nipannassāpi kittakā.
And how many are there for lying down?”
Gacchantassa catasso āpattiyo,
“There are four offenses for traveling,
Ṭhitassa cāpi tattakā;
And the same number for standing.
Nisinnassa catasso āpattiyo,
There are four offenses for sitting,
Nipannassāpi tattakā.
And the same number for lying down.”
3. Pācittiya
3. Offenses entailing confession
Kati pācittiyāni,
“How many offenses entailing confession,
sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,
Apubbaṁ acarimaṁ,
Might one commit together,
āpajjeyya ekato.
All at the same time?”
Pañca pācittiyāni,
“There are five offenses entailing confession,
sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,
Apubbaṁ acarimaṁ,
That one might commit together,
āpajjeyya ekato.
All at the same time.”
Kati pācittiyāni,
“How many offenses entailing confession,
sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,
Apubbaṁ acarimaṁ,
Might one commit together,
āpajjeyya ekato.
All at the same time?”
Nava pācittiyāni,
“There are nine offenses entailing confession,
sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,
Apubbaṁ acarimaṁ,
That one might commit together,
āpajjeyya ekato.
All at the same time.”
Kati pācittiyāni,
“How many offenses entailing confession,
sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,
Kati vācāya deseyya,
Should be confessed by how many statements,
vuttā ādiccabandhunā.
As spoken by the Kinsman of the Sun?”
Pañca pācittiyāni,
“There are five offenses entailing confession,
sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,
Ekavācāya deseyya,
That should be confessed by one statement,
vuttā ādiccabandhunā.
As spoken by the Kinsman of the Sun.”
Kati pācittiyāni,
“How many offenses entailing confession,
sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,
Kati vācāya deseyya,
Should be confessed by how many statements,
vuttā ādiccabandhunā.
As spoken by the Kinsman of the Sun?”
Nava pācittiyāni,
“There are nine offenses entailing confession,
sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,
Ekavācāya deseyya,
That should be confessed by one statement,
vuttā ādiccabandhunā.

Kati pācittiyāni,
“How many offenses entailing confession,

Kiñca kittetvā deseyya,
Should one describe and then confess,
vuttā ādiccabandhunā.

Pañca pācittiyāni,
“There are five offenses entailing confession,
sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,
Vatthuṁ kittetvā deseyya,
Where one should describe the basis and then confess,
vuttā ādiccabandhunā.
As spoken by the Kinsman of the Sun.”
Kati pācittiyāni,
“How many offenses entailing confession,
sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,
Kiñca kittetvā deseyya,
Should one describe and then confess,
vuttā ādiccabandhunā.

Nava pācittiyāni,
“There are nine offenses entailing confession,
sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,
Vatthuṁ kittetvā deseyya,
Where one should describe the basis and then confess,

Yāvatatiyake kati āpattiyo,
“How many offenses are there after the third announcement?
Kati vohārapaccayā;
How many are there on account of speech?
Khādantassa kati āpattiyo,
How many are there for eating?
Kati bhojanapaccayā.
And how many on account of cooked food?
Yāvatatiyake tisso āpattiyo,
“There are three offenses after the third announcement,
Cha vohārapaccayā;
And six on account of speech.
Khādantassa tisso āpattiyo,
There are three offenses for eating,
Pañca bhojanapaccayā.
And five on account of cooked food.”
Sabbā yāvatatiyakā,
“Of all offenses after the third announcement,
Kati ṭhānāni gacchanti;
How many cases are there?
Katinañceva āpatti,
And for how many are there offenses?
Katinaṁ adhikaraṇena ca.
And for how many is there a legal issue?”
Sabbā yāvatatiyakā,
“Of all offenses after the third announcement,
Pañca ṭhānāni gacchanti;
There are five cases.
Pañcannañceva āpatti,
And there are offenses for five,
Pañcannaṁ adhikaraṇena ca.
And legal issues for five.”
Katinaṁ vinicchayo hoti,
“For how many is there a decision?
katinaṁ vūpasamena ca;
For how many is there a resolution?
Katinañceva anāpatti,
For how many is there no offense?
katihi ṭhānehi sobhati.
For how many reasons does one shine?”
Pañcannaṁ vinicchayo hoti,
“There is a decision for five,
pañcannaṁ vūpasamena ca;
And a resolution for five.
Pañcannañceva anāpatti,
There is no offense for five,
tīhi ṭhānehi sobhati.
And one shines for five reasons.”
Kati kāyikā rattiṁ,
“How many offenses are there by body at night?
Kati kāyikā divā;
How many are there by body by day?
Nijjhāyantassa kati āpatti,
How many offenses are there for staring?
Kati piṇḍapātapaccayā.
How many on account of almsfood?”
Dve kāyikā rattiṁ,
“There are two offenses by body at night,
Dve kāyikā divā;
And there are two by body by day.
Nijjhāyantassa ekā āpatti,
There is one offense for staring,
Ekā piṇḍapātapaccayā.
And one on account of almsfood.”
Katānisaṁse sampassaṁ,
“Seeing how many benefits
paresaṁ saddhāya desaye;
Should one confess out of confidence in others?
Ukkhittakā kati vuttā,
How many kinds of people are said to be ejected?
kati sammāvattanā.
And how many are the proper conducts?”
Aṭṭhānisaṁse sampassaṁ,
“Seeing eight benefits
Paresaṁ saddhāya desaye;
One should confess out of confidence in others.
Ukkhittakā tayo vuttā,
Three kinds are said to be ejected,
Tecattālīsa sammāvattanā.
And there are forty-three proper conducts.”
Kati ṭhāne musāvādo,
“How many cases of lying are there?
kati paramanti vuccati;
How many are called ‘at most’?
Kati pāṭidesanīyā,
How many offenses entailing acknowledgment are there?
katinaṁ desanāya ca.
And for how many is there confession?”
Pañca ṭhāne musāvādo,
“There are five cases of lying,
Cuddasa paramanti vuccati;
And fourteen are called ‘at most’.
Dvādasa pāṭidesanīyā,
There are twelve offenses entailing acknowledgment,
Catunnaṁ desanāya ca.
And there is confession for four.”
Kataṅgiko musāvādo,
“How many factors does lying have?
kati uposathaṅgāni;
And how many factors the observance day?
Kati dūteyyaṅgāni,
How many are the qualities of a qualified messenger?
kati titthiyavattanā.
How many are the customs of monastics of other religions?”
Aṭṭhaṅgiko musāvādo,
“Lying has eight factors,
aṭṭha uposathaṅgāni;
As does the observance day.
Aṭṭha dūteyyaṅgāni,
A qualified messenger has eight qualities,
aṭṭha titthiyavattanā.
And other monastics have eight customs.”
Kativācikā upasampadā,
“How many statements are there for an ordination?
Katinaṁ paccuṭṭhātabbaṁ;
For how many should one get up?
Katinaṁ āsanaṁ dātabbaṁ,
To how many should one give a seat?
Bhikkhunovādako katihi.
Through how many qualities is one an instructor of the nuns?”
Aṭṭhavācikā upasampadā,
“There are eight statements for an ordination.
Aṭṭhannaṁ paccuṭṭhātabbaṁ;
One should get up for eight kinds of people,
Aṭṭhannaṁ āsanaṁ dātabbaṁ,
And likewise give a seat to eight.
Bhikkhunovādako aṭṭhahi.
One an instructor of the nuns through eight qualities.”
Katinaṁ chejjaṁ hoti,
“For how many is there a ‘cutting off’?
katinaṁ thullaccayaṁ;
For how many is there a serious offense?
Katinañceva anāpatti,
And for how many is there no offense?
sabbesaṁ ekavatthukā.
It is given that all of them did the same act as basis.”
Ekassa chejjaṁ hoti,
“There is a ‘cutting off’ for one,
catunnaṁ thullaccayaṁ;
A serious offense for four,
Catunnañceva anāpatti,
And there is no offense for four—
sabbesaṁ ekavatthukā.
Given that all of them did the same act as basis.”
Kati āghātavatthūni,
“How many are the grounds for resentment?
katihi saṅgho bhijjati;
How many kinds of people cause a schism in the Sangha?
Katettha paṭhamāpattikā,
How many here are immediate offenses?
ñattiyā karaṇā kati.
How many ways are there of doing a motion?”
Nava āghātavatthūni,
“There are nine grounds for resentment,
navahi saṅgho bhijjati;
And nine kinds of people cause a schism.
Navettha paṭhamāpattikā,
There are nine immediate offenses,
ñattiyā karaṇā nava.
And nine ways of doing a motion.”
4. Avandanīyapuggalādi
4. Persons one should not pay respect to, etc.
Kati puggalā nābhivādetabbā,
“How many kinds of people should one not bow down to,
Añjalisāmicena ca;
Nor raise one’s joined palms to, nor do acts of respect toward?
Katinaṁ dukkaṭaṁ hoti,
For how many is there an offense of wrong conduct?
Kati cīvaradhāraṇā.
How many days of keeping a robe?”
Dasa puggalā nābhivādetabbā,
“There are ten kinds of people one should not bow down to,
Añjalisāmicena ca;
Nor raise one’s joined palms to, nor do acts of respect toward.
Dasannaṁ dukkaṭaṁ hoti,
There is an offense of wrong doing for ten.
Dasa cīvaradhāraṇā.
There are ten days of keeping a robe.”
Katinaṁ vassaṁvuṭṭhānaṁ,
“To how many kinds of people who have completed the rains residence
dātabbaṁ idha cīvaraṁ;
Should robe-cloth be given?
Katinaṁ sante dātabbaṁ,
When how many exist, should it be given?
katinañceva na dātabbaṁ.
And to how many kinds of people should it not be given?”
Pañcannaṁ vassaṁvuṭṭhānaṁ,
“Robe-cloth should be given to five kinds
dātabbaṁ idha cīvaraṁ;
Who have completed the rains residence.
Sattannaṁ sante dātabbaṁ,
When seven exist, it should be give,
soḷasannaṁ na dātabbaṁ.
And it should not be given to sixteen kinds.”
Katisataṁ rattisataṁ,
“Having concealing how many hundreds of offenses
āpattiyo chādayitvāna;
For a hundred days?
Kati rattiyo vasitvāna,
After spending how many days,
mucceyya pārivāsiko.
Could he be released from probation?”
Dasasataṁ rattisataṁ,
“Having concealing ten hundred offenses
āpattiyo chādayitvāna;
For a hundred days,
Dasa rattiyo vasitvāna,
Then after spending ten days,
mucceyya pārivāsiko.
He could be released from probation.”
Kati kammadosā vuttā,
“How many kinds of flaws in legal procedures
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?
Campāyaṁ vinayavatthusmiṁ,
In the Monastic Law, in the account of those from Campā,
sabbeva adhammikā kati.
How many were illegitimate?”
Dvādasa kammadosā vuttā,
“Twelve kinds of flaws in legal procedures
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.
Campāyaṁ vinayavatthusmiṁ,
In the Monastic Law, in the account of those from Campā,
sabbeva adhammikā katā.
All were done illegitimately.”
Kati kammasampattiyo vuttā,
“How many kinds of successes in legal procedures
Buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?
Campāyaṁ vinayavatthusmiṁ,
In the Monastic Law, in the account of those from Campā,
Sabbeva dhammikā kati.
How many were legitimate?”
Catasso kammasampattiyo vuttā,
“Four kinds of successes in legal procedures
Buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.
Campāyaṁ vinayavatthusmiṁ,
In the Monastic Law, in the account of those from Campā,
Sabbeva dhammikā katā.
All were done legitimately.”
Kati kammāni vuttāni,
“How many kinds of legal procedures
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?
Campāyaṁ vinayavatthusmiṁ,
In the Monastic Law, in the account of those from Campā,
dhammikā adhammikā kati.
How many were legitimate and how many illegitimate?”
Cha kammāni vuttāni,
“Six legal procedures
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.
Campāyaṁ vinayavatthusmiṁ,
In the Monastic Law, in the account of those from Campā,
ekettha dhammikā katā;
One done legitimately,
Pañca adhammikā vuttā,

dhammikā adhammikā kati.
How many were legitimate and how many illegitimate?”
Cattāri kammāni vuttāni,
“Four legal procedures
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.
Campāyaṁ vinayavatthusmiṁ,
In the Monastic Law, in the account of those from Campā,
ekettha dhammikā katā;
One done legitimately,
Tayo adhammikā vuttā,
And three illegitimately,
buddhenādiccabandhunā.
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.”
Yaṁ desitaṁnantajinena tādinā,
“In regard to the classes of offenses taught by the unbounded Victor, the Unshakable One,
Āpattikkhandhāni vivekadassinā;
The Knower of seclusion,
Katettha sammanti vinā samathehi,
How many are settled without settling?
Pucchāmi taṁ brūhi vibhaṅgakovida.
You who are skilled in analysis, please say.”
Yaṁ desitaṁnantajinena tādinā,
“In regard to the classes of offenses taught by the unbounded Victor, the Unshakable One,
Āpattikkhandhāni vivekadassinā;
The Knower of seclusion,
Ekettha sammati vinā samathehi,
One is settled without settling.
Etaṁ te akkhāmi vibhaṅgakovida.
I declare this to you who are skilled in analysis.”
Kati āpāyikā vuttā,
“How many who are destined to misery
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?
Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
We will listen to you,
vinayāni suṇoma te.
One who understands the Monastic Law.”
Chaūnadiyaḍḍhasatā vuttā,
“One hundred and forty-four
Buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.
Āpāyikā nerayikā,
Destined to misery, bound for hell,
Kappaṭṭhā saṅghabhedakā;
He who causes a schism in the Sangha remains there for an eon.
Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
Listen to me,
Vinayāni suṇohi me.
One who understands the Monastic Law.”
Kati nāpāyikā vuttā,
“How many who are not destined to misery
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?
Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
We will listen to you,
vinayāni suṇoma te.

One who understands the Monastic Law.”

“How many groups of eight
buddhenādiccabandhunā;

“Sixteen kinds of legal procedures
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.
Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
Listen to me,
vinayāni suṇohi me.
One who understands the Monastic Law.”
Kati kammadosā vuttā,
“How many kinds of flaws in legal procedures
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?

Dvādasa kammadosā vuttā,
“Twelve kinds of flaws

Tevīsa saṅghādisesā vuttā,
“Twenty-three offenses entailing suspension
Buddhenādiccabandhunā;

Kati aniyatā vuttā,
“How many undetermined offenses
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?
Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
We will listen to you,
vinayāni suṇoma te.

Dve aniyatā vuttā,
“Two undetermined offenses
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.

One who understands the Monastic Law.”
Kati nissaggiyā vuttā,
“How many offenses entailing relinquishment
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?

We will listen to you,
vinayāni suṇoma te.
One who understands the Monastic Law.”
Dvecattālīsa nissaggiyā vuttā,
“Forty-two offenses entailing relinquishment
Buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.

Listen to me,
Vinayāni suṇohi me.
One who understands the Monastic Law.”
Kati pācittiyā vuttā,
“How many offenses entailing confession
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?
Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
We will listen to you,
vinayāni suṇoma te.
One who understands the Monastic Law.”
Aṭṭhāsītisataṁ pācittiyā vuttā,
“One hundred and eighty-eight offenses entailing confession
Buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.
Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
Listen to me,
Vinayāni suṇohi me.
One who understands the Monastic Law.”
Kati pāṭidesanīyā vuttā,
“How many offenses entailing acknowledgment
Buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?
Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
We will listen to you,
Vinayāni suṇoma te.
One who understands the Monastic Law.”
Dvādasa pāṭidesanīyā vuttā,
“Twelve offenses entailing acknowledgment
Buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.
Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
Listen to me,
Vinayāni suṇohi me.
One who understands the Monastic Law.”
Kati sekhiyā vuttā,
“How many rules to be trained in
buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?
Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
We will listen to you,
vinayāni suṇoma te.
One who understands the Monastic Law.”
Pañcasattati sekhiyā vuttā,
“Seventy-five rules to be trained in
Buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were spoken of by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.
Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
Listen to me,
Vinayāni suṇohi me.
One who understands the Monastic Law.
Yāva supucchitaṁ tayā,
What has been well asked by you,
yāva suvissajjitaṁ mayā;
What has been well answered by me,
Pucchāvissajjanāya vā,
For either the questions or the answers,
natthi kiñci asuttakanti.
There is nothing apart from the Teaching.”
Dutiyagāthāsaṅgaṇikaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ.
