Awake Awake
Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
At Savatthi.
Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:
Standing to one side, that devatā recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
“Kati jāgarataṁ suttā,
“How many sleep among the waking?
“How many are asleep when others are awake?
kati suttesu jāgarā;
How many wake among the sleeping?
How many are awake when others sleep?
Katibhi rajamādeti,
By how many do you gather dust?
By how many does one gather dust?
katibhi parisujjhatī”ti.
By how many are you cleansed?”
By how many is one purified?”
“Pañca jāgarataṁ suttā,
“Five sleep among the waking.
“Five are asleep when others are awake;
pañca suttesu jāgarā;
Five wake among the sleeping.
Five are awake when others sleep.
Pañcabhi rajamādeti,
By five you gather dust.
By five things one gathers dust,
pañcabhi parisujjhatī”ti.
By five you’re cleansed.”
By five things one is purified. ”
