Lamps Sources of Light

“Kati lokasmiṁ pajjotā,
“How many lamps are there
“How many sources of light are in the world

Tehi loko pakāsati;
that light up the world?
By means of which the world is illumined?

Bhagavantaṁ puṭṭhumāgamma,
We’ve come to ask the Buddha;
We have come to ask the Blessed One this:

Kathaṁ jānemu taṁ mayan”ti.
how are we to understand this?”
How are we to understand it?”

“Cattāro loke pajjotā,
“There are four lamps in the world,
“There are four sources of light in the world;

pañcamettha na vijjati;
a fifth is not found.
A fifth one is not found here.

Divā tapati ādicco,
The sun blazes by day,
The sun shines by day,

rattimābhāti candimā.
the moon glows at night,
The moon glows at night,

Atha aggi divārattiṁ,
while a fire lights up both
And fire, both by day and at night,

tattha tattha pakāsati;
by day and by night.
flares up here and there.

Sambuddho tapataṁ seṭṭho,
But a Buddha is the best of lights:
But the Buddha is the best of those that shine:

esā ābhā anuttarā”ti.
this is the supreme radiance.”
He is the light unsurpassed. ”
