Paṭhamapajjunnadhītusutta

With Pajjunna’s Daughter (1st) Pajjunna’s Daughter (1)

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.
Thus have I heard.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Vesali in the Great Wood in the Hall with the Peaked Roof.

Atha kho kokanadā pajjunnassa dhītā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ mahāvanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.
Then, late at night, the beautiful Kokanadā, Pajjunna’s daughter, lighting up the entire Great Wood, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side,
Then, when the night had advanced, Kokanada, Pajjunna’s daughter, of stunning beauty, illuminating the entire Great Wood, approached the Blessed One.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā kokanadā pajjunnassa dhītā bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
and recited these verses in the Buddha’s presence:
Having approached, she paid homage to the Blessed One, stood to one side, and recited these verses in the presence of the Blessed One:

“Vesāliyaṁ vane viharantaṁ,
“Staying in the woods of Vesālī
Dwelling in the woods at Vesali.

Aggaṁ sattassa sambuddhaṁ;
is the Buddha, best of beings.
“I worship the Buddha, the best of beings,

Kokanadāhamasmi abhivande,
Kokanadā am I who worships him,
Kokanada am I,

Kokanadā pajjunnassa dhītā.
Kokanadā, Pajjuna’s daughter.
Kokanada, Pajjunna’s daughter.

Sutameva pure āsi,
Previously I had only heard
“Earlier I had only heard

Dhammo cakkhumatānubuddho;
the teaching realized by the Clear-eyed One.
that the Dhamma has been realized by the One with Vision;

Sāhaṁ dāni sakkhi jānāmi,
But now I know it as a witness
But now I know it as a witness

Munino desayato sugatassa.
while the sage, the Holy One teaches.
While the Sage, the Fortunate One, teaches.

Ye keci ariyaṁ dhammaṁ,
There are simpletons who go about
Those who, the noble Dhamma,

Vigarahantā caranti dummedhā;
denouncing the teaching of the noble ones.
“Those ignorant people who go about critizing

Upenti roruvaṁ ghoraṁ,
They fall into the terrible Hell of Screams
Pass on to the terrible Roruva hell

Cirarattaṁ dukkhaṁ anubhavanti.
where they suffer long.
And experience suffering for a long time.

Ye ca kho ariye dhamme,
There are those who have found <j>acceptance and peace
In regard to the noble Dhamma,

Khantiyā upasamena upetā;
in the teaching of the noble ones.
“But those who have peace and acquiescence

Pahāya mānusaṁ dehaṁ,
After giving up this human body,
On discarding the human body,

Devakāyaṁ paripūressantī”ti.
they swell the hosts of gods.”
Will fill the host of devas. ”
