Araṇasutta

Without Conflict Without Conflict

“Kesūdha araṇā loke,
“Who here in the world are placid?
“Who in the world has no conflict?

kesaṁ vusitaṁ na nassati;
Whose mode of life is not squandered?
Whose life is not lost?

Kedha icchaṁ parijānanti,
Who here fully understand desire?
Who here completely understands desire?

kesaṁ bhojissiyaṁ sadā.
Who enjoy perpetual freedom?
Who always lives as their own master?

Kiṁsu mātā pitā bhātā,
“Whom do parents and brothers worship
To whom do mother, father, and brothers

vandanti naṁ patiṭṭhitaṁ;
When he stands firmly established?
bow when they’re established?

Kiṁsu idha jātihīnaṁ,
Who is the one of humble birth
Who here, though of low birth,

abhivādenti khattiyā”ti.
That even khattiyas here salute?”
is bowed to even by aristocrats?”

“Samaṇīdha araṇā loke,
“Ascetics are placid in the world;
“Ascetics have no conflict in the world.

Samaṇānaṁ vusitaṁ na nassati;
The ascetic life is not squandered;
The life of ascetics is not lost.

Samaṇā icchaṁ parijānanti,
Ascetics fully understand desire;
Ascetics completely understand desire.

Samaṇānaṁ bhojissiyaṁ sadā.
They enjoy perpetual freedom.
Ascetics always live as their own master.

Samaṇaṁ mātā pitā bhātā,
“Parents and brothers worship an ascetic
Mother, father, and brothers

vandanti naṁ patiṭṭhitaṁ;
hen he stands firmly established.
bow to ascetics when they’re established.

Samaṇīdha jātihīnaṁ,
Though an ascetic be of humble birth
Even though an ascetic is of low birth,

abhivādenti khattiyā”ti.
Even khattiyas here salute him.”
they’re bowed to even by aristocrats.”

Chetvāvaggo aṭṭhamo.
