Upacālā With Upacālā

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
At Sāvatthī.

Atha kho upacālā bhikkhunī pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā …pe…
Then, in the morning, the bhikkhunī Upacālā dressed …
Then the nun Upacālā robed up in the morning …

aññatarasmiṁ rukkhamūle divāvihāraṁ nisīdi.
she sat down at the foot of a tree for the day’s abiding.
and sat at the root of a tree for the day’s meditation.

Atha kho māro pāpimā yena upacālā bhikkhunī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā upacālaṁ bhikkhuniṁ etadavoca:
Then Māra the Evil One approached the bhikkhunī Upacālā and said to her:
Then Māra the Wicked went up to Upacālā and said to her,

“kattha nu tvaṁ, bhikkhuni, uppajjitukāmā”ti?
“Where do you wish to be reborn, bhikkhunī?”
“Nun, where do you want to be reborn?”

“Na khvāhaṁ, āvuso, katthaci uppajjitukāmā”ti.
“I do not wish to be reborn anywhere, friend. ”
“I don’t want to be reborn anywhere, sir.”

“Tāvatiṁsā ca yāmā ca,
“There are Tāvatiṃsa and Yāma devas,
“There are the Gods of the Thirty-Three, <j>and those of Yama;

tusitā cāpi devatā;
And devatās of the Tusita realm,
also the Joyful Deities,

Nimmānaratino devā,
Devas who take delight in creating,
the Gods Who Love to Imagine,

ye devā vasavattino;
And devas who exercise control.
and the Gods Who Control what is Imagined by Others.

Tattha cittaṁ paṇidhehi,
Direct your mind there [to those realms]
Set your heart on such places,

ratiṁ paccanubhossasī”ti.
And you’ll experience delight. ”
and you’ll undergo delight.”

“Tāvatiṁsā ca yāmā ca,
“There are Tāvatiṃsa and Yāma devas,
“The Gods of the Thirty-Three, <j>and those of Yama;

tusitā cāpi devatā;
And devatās of the Tusita realm,
also the Joyful Deities,

Nimmānaratino devā,
Devas who take delight in creating,
the Gods Who Love to Imagine,

ye devā vasavattino;
And devas who exercise control.
and the Gods Who Control what is Imagined by Others—

Kāmabandhanabaddhā te,
They are still bound by sensual bondage,
they’re bound with the bonds of sensuality;

enti māravasaṁ puna.
They come again under Māra’s control.
they fall under your sway again.

Sabbo ādīpito loko,
“All the world is on fire,
All the world is on fire,

sabbo loko padhūpito;
All the world is burning,
all the world is smoldering,

Sabbo pajjālito loko,
All the world is ablaze,
all the world is ablaze,

sabbo loko pakampito.
All the world is quaking.
all the world is rocking.

Akampitaṁ apajjalitaṁ,
“That which does not quake or blaze,
My mind adores that place

aputhujjanasevitaṁ;
That to which worldlings do not resort,
where Māra cannot go;

Agati yattha mārassa,
Where there is no place for Māra:
it’s not shaking or burning,

tattha me nirato mano”ti.
That is where my mind delights. ”
and not frequented by ordinary people.”

Atha kho māro pāpimā “jānāti maṁ upacālā bhikkhunī”ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Then Māra the Evil One, realizing, “The bhikkhunī Upacālā knows me, sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, “The nun Upacālā knows me!” miserable and sad, vanished right there.
