Atha kho sīsupacālā bhikkhunī pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā …pe…
Then the nun Sīsupacālā robed up in the morning …
Then, in the morning, the bhikkhunī Sīsupacālā dressed …
aññatarasmiṁ rukkhamūle divāvihāraṁ nisīdi.
and sat at the root of a tree for the day’s meditation.
she sat down at the foot of a tree for the day’s abiding.
Atha kho māro pāpimā yena sīsupacālā bhikkhunī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā sīsupacālaṁ bhikkhuniṁ etadavoca:
Then Māra the Wicked went up to Sīsupacālā and said to her,
Then Māra the Evil One approached the bhikkhunī Sīsupacālā and said to her:
“kassa nu tvaṁ, bhikkhuni, pāsaṇḍaṁ rocesī”ti?
“Nun, whose creed do you believe in?”
“Whose creed do you approve of, bhikkhunī?”
“Na khvāhaṁ, āvuso, kassaci pāsaṇḍaṁ rocemī”ti.
“I don’t believe in anyone’s creed, sir.”
“I don’t approve of anyone’s creed, friend. ”
“Kaṁ nu uddissa muṇḍāsi,
“In whose name did you shave your head?
“Under whom have you shaved your head?
Samaṇī viya dissasi;
You look like an ascetic,
You do appear to be an ascetic,
Na ca rocesi pāsaṇḍaṁ,
but you don’t believe in any creed.
Yet you don’t approve of any creed,
Kimiva carasi momūhā”ti.
Why do you live as if lost?”
So why wander as if bewildered?”
“Ito bahiddhā pāsaṇḍā,
“Followers of other creeds
“Outside here the followers of creeds
diṭṭhīsu pasīdanti te;
are confident in their views.
Place their confidence in views.
Na tesaṁ dhammaṁ rocemi,
But I don’t believe in their teaching,
I don’t approve of their teachings;
te dhammassa akovidā.
for they’re no experts in the Dhamma.
They are not skilled in the Dhamma.
Atthi sakyakule jāto,
But there is one born in the Sakyan clan,
“But there’s one born in the Sakyan clan,
buddho appaṭipuggalo;
the unrivaled Buddha,
The Enlightened One, without an equal,
Sabbābhibhū māranudo,
champion, dispeller of Māra,
Conqueror of all, Māra’s subduer,
sabbatthamaparājito.
everywhere undefeated,
Who everywhere is undefeated,
Sabbattha mutto asito,
everywhere freed, and unattached,
Everywhere freed and unattached,
sabbaṁ passati cakkhumā;
the Clear-eyed One sees all.
The One with Vision who sees all.
Sabbakammakkhayaṁ patto,
He has attained the end of all deeds,
“Attained to the end of all kamma,
vimutto upadhisaṅkhaye;
freed with the ending of attachments.
Liberated in the extinction of acquisitions,
So mayhaṁ bhagavā satthā,
That Blessed One is my Teacher,
That Blessed One is my Teacher:
tassa rocemi sāsanan”ti.
and I believe in his instruction.”
His is the teaching I approve. ”
Atha kho māro pāpimā “jānāti maṁ sīsupacālā bhikkhunī”ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, “The nun Sīsupacālā knows me!” miserable and sad, vanished right there.
Then Māra the Evil One, realizing, “The bhikkhunī Sīsupacālā knows me, ” sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
