Kokālikasutta

With Kokālika Kokālika

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
At Sāvatthī.

Atha kho kokāliko bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho kokāliko bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then the mendicant Kokālika went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,
Then the bhikkhu Kokālika approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, sat down to one side, and said:

“pāpicchā, bhante, sāriputtamoggallānā pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gatā”ti.
“Sir, Sāriputta and Moggallāna have corrupt wishes. They’ve fallen under the sway of corrupt wishes.”
“Venerable sir, Sāriputta and Moggallāna have evil wishes; they have come under the control of evil wishes. ”

Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā kokālikaṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:
When this was said, the Buddha said to Kokālika,
When this was said, the Blessed One said to the bhikkhu Kokālika:

“mā hevaṁ, kokālika, avaca; mā hevaṁ, kokālika, avaca.
“Don’t say that, Kokālika! Don’t say that, Kokālika!
“Do not speak thus, Kokālika! Do not speak thus, Kokālika!

Pasādehi, kokālika, sāriputtamoggallānesu cittaṁ. Pesalā sāriputtamoggallānā”ti.
Have confidence in Sāriputta and Moggallāna, they’re good monks.”
Place confidence in Sāriputta and Moggallāna , Kokālika. Sāriputta and Moggallāna are well behaved. ”

Dutiyampi kho kokāliko bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
For a second time Kokālika said to the Buddha,
A second time the bhikkhu Kokālika said to the Blessed One:

“kiñcāpi me, bhante, bhagavā saddhāyiko paccayiko; atha kho pāpicchāva bhante, sāriputtamoggallānā pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gatā”ti.
“Despite my faith and trust in the Buddha, Sāriputta and Moggallāna have corrupt wishes. They’ve fallen under the sway of corrupt wishes.”
A second time the bhikkhu Kokalika said to the Blessed One: “Venerable sir, although the Blessed One has my faith and trust, all the same I say that Sāriputta and Moggallāna have evil wishes; they have come under the control of evil wishes. ”

Dutiyampi kho bhagavā kokālikaṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:
For a second time, the Buddha said to Kokālika,
And a second time the Blessed One said to the bhikkhu Kokālika:

“mā hevaṁ, kokālika, avaca; mā hevaṁ, kokālika, avaca.
“Don’t say that, Kokālika! Don’t say that, Kokālika!
“Do not speak thus, Kokālika!… Sāriputta and Moggallāna are well behaved. ”

Tatiyampi kho bhagavā kokālikaṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:
For a third time, the Buddha said to Kokālika,
And a third time the Blessed One said to the bhikkhu Kokālika:

“mā hevaṁ …pe…
“Don’t say that, Kokālika! Don’t say that, Kokālika!
“Do not speak thus, Kokālika!… Sāriputta and Moggallāna are well behaved. ”

pesalā sāriputtamoggallānā”ti.
Have confidence in Sāriputta and Moggallāna, they’re good monks.”

Atha kho kokāliko bhikkhu uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi.
Then Kokālika got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.
Then the bhikkhu Kokālika rose from his seat, paid homage to the Blessed One, and departed, keeping him on his right.

Acirapakkantassa ca kokālikassa bhikkhuno sāsapamattīhi pīḷakāhi sabbo kāyo phuṭo ahosi.
Not long after he left his body erupted with boils the size of mustard seeds.
Not long after the bhikkhu Kokālika had left, his entire body became covered with boils the size of mustard seeds.

Sāsapamattiyo hutvā muggamattiyo ahesuṁ, muggamattiyo hutvā kalāyamattiyo ahesuṁ, kalāyamattiyo hutvā kolaṭṭhimattiyo ahesuṁ, kolaṭṭhimattiyo hutvā kolamattiyo ahesuṁ, kolamattiyo hutvā āmalakamattiyo ahesuṁ, āmalakamattiyo hutvā beluvasalāṭukamattiyo ahesuṁ, beluvasalāṭukamattiyo hutvā billamattiyo ahesuṁ, billamattiyo hutvā pabhijjiṁsu. Pubbañca lohitañca pagghariṁsu.
The boils grew to the size of mung beans, then chickpeas, then jujube seeds, then jujubes, then myrobalans, then unripe wood apples, then ripe wood apples. Finally they burst open, and pus and blood oozed out.
These then grew to the size of mung beans; then to the size of chickpeas; then to the size of jujube stones; then to the size of jujube fruits; then to the size of myrobalans; then to the size of unripe beluva fruits; then to the size of ripe beluva fruits.

Atha kho kokāliko bhikkhu teneva ābādhena kālamakāsi.
Then the mendicant Kokālika died of that illness.
When they had grown to the size of ripe beluva fruits, they burst open, exuding pus and blood. Then, on account of that illness, the bhikkhu Kokālika died,

Kālaṅkato ca kokāliko bhikkhu padumaṁ nirayaṁ upapajji sāriputtamoggallānesu cittaṁ āghātetvā.
He was reborn in the Pink Lotus hell because of his resentment for Sāriputta and Moggallāna.
and because he had harboured animosity towards Sāriputta and Moggallāna, after his death he was reborn in the Paduma hell.

Atha kho brahmā sahampati abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho brahmā sahampati bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then, late at night, the beautiful divinity Sahampati, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him,
Then, when the night had advanced, Brahmā Sahampati, of stunning beauty, illuminating the entire Jeta’s Grove, approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, stood to one side, and said to him:

“kokāliko, bhante, bhikkhu kālaṅkato.
“Sir, the mendicant Kokālika has passed away.
“Venerable sir, the bhikkhu Kokālika has died,

Kālaṅkato ca, bhante, kokāliko bhikkhu padumaṁ nirayaṁ upapanno sāriputtamoggallānesu cittaṁ āghātetvā”ti.
He was reborn in the Pink Lotus hell because of his resentment for Sāriputta and Moggallāna.”
and because he harboured animosity towards Sāriputta and Moggallāna, after his death he has been reborn in the Paduma hell. ”

Idamavoca brahmā sahampati.
That’s what the divinity Sahampati said.
This is what Brahmā Sahampati said.

Idaṁ vatvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Then he bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right side, before vanishing right there.
Having said this, he paid homage to the Blessed One and, keeping him on his right, he disappeared right there.

Atha kho bhagavā tassā rattiyā accayena bhikkhū āmantesi:
Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha told the mendicants all that had happened.
Then, when the night had passed, the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus thus:

“imaṁ, bhikkhave, rattiṁ brahmā sahampati abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yenāhaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā maṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho, bhikkhave, brahmā sahampati maṁ etadavoca:
“Bhikkhus, last night, when the night had advanced, Brahmā Sahampati approached me and said to me: … (as above) … Having said this, he paid homage to me and, keeping me on his right, he disappeared right there. ”

‘kokāliko, bhante, bhikkhu kālaṅkato.

Kālaṅkato ca, bhante, kokāliko bhikkhu padumaṁ nirayaṁ upapanno sāriputtamoggallānesu cittaṁ āghātetvā’ti.

Idamavoca, bhikkhave, brahmā sahampati, idaṁ vatvā maṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyī”ti.

Evaṁ vutte, aññataro bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When he said this, one of the mendicants asked the Buddha,
When this was said, a certain bhikkhu said to the Blessed One:

“kīvadīghaṁ nu kho, bhante, padume niraye āyuppamāṇan”ti?
“Sir, how long is the life span in the Pink Lotus hell?”
“Venerable sir, how long is the life span in the Paduma hell?”

“Dīghaṁ kho, bhikkhu, padume niraye āyuppamāṇaṁ.
“It’s long, mendicant.
“The life span in the Paduma hell is long, bhikkhu.

Taṁ na sukaraṁ saṅkhātuṁ:
It’s not easy to calculate
It is not easy to count it and say

‘ettakāni vassāni iti vā, ettakāni vassasatāni iti vā, ettakāni vassasahassāni iti vā, ettakāni vassasatasahassāni iti vā’”ti.
how many years, how many hundreds or thousands or hundreds of thousands of years it lasts.”
it is so many years, or so many hundreds of years, or so many thousands of years, or so many hundreds of thousands of years. ”

“Sakkā pana, bhante, upamaṁ kātun”ti?
“But sir, is it possible to give a simile?”
“Then is it possible to give a simile, venerable sir?”

“Sakkā, bhikkhū”ti bhagavā avoca:
“It’s possible,” said the Buddha.
“It is possible, bhikkhu.

“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhu vīsatikhāriko kosalako tilavāho. Tato puriso vassasatassa vassasatassa accayena ekamekaṁ tilaṁ uddhareyya;
“Suppose there was a Kosalan cartload of twenty bushels of sesame seed. And at the end of every hundred years someone would remove a single seed from it.
Suppose, bhikkhu, there was a Kosalan cartload of twenty measures of sesamum seed. At the end of every hundred years a man would remove one seed from there.

khippataraṁ kho so, bhikkhu, vīsatikhāriko kosalako tilavāho iminā upakkamena parikkhayaṁ pariyādānaṁ gaccheyya, na tveva eko abbudo nirayo.
By this means the Kosalan cartload of twenty bushels of sesame seed would run out faster than a single lifetime in the Abbuda hell.
That Kosalan cartload of twenty measures of sesamum seed might by this effort be depleted and eliminated more quickly than a single Abbuda hell would go by.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhu, vīsati abbudā nirayā, evameko nirabbudanirayo.
Now, twenty lifetimes in the Abbuda hell equal one lifetime in the Nirabbuda hell.
Twenty Abbuda hells are the equivalent of one Nirabbuda hell;

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhu, vīsati nirabbudā nirayā, evameko ababo nirayo.
Twenty lifetimes in the Nirabbuda hell equal one lifetime in the Ababa hell.
twenty Nirabbuda hells are the equivalent of one Ababa hell;

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhu, vīsati ababā nirayā, evameko aṭaṭo nirayo.
Twenty lifetimes in the Ababa hell equal one lifetime in the Aṭaṭa hell.
twenty Ababa hells are the equivalent of one Aṭaṭa hell;

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhu, vīsati aṭaṭā nirayā, evameko ahaho nirayo.
Twenty lifetimes in the Aṭaṭa hell equal one lifetime in the Ahaha hell.
twenty Aṭaṭa hells are the equivalent of one Ahaha hell;

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhu, vīsati ahahā nirayā, evameko kumudo nirayo.
Twenty lifetimes in the Ahaha hell equal one lifetime in the Yellow Lotus hell.
twenty Ahaha hells are the equivalent of one Kumuda hell;

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhu, vīsati kumudā nirayā, evameko sogandhiko nirayo.
Twenty lifetimes in the Yellow Lotus hell equal one lifetime in the Sweet-Smelling hell.
twenty Kumuda hells are the equivalent of one Sogandhika hell;

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhu, vīsati sogandhikā nirayā, evameko uppalanirayo.
Twenty lifetimes in the Sweet-Smelling hell equal one lifetime in the Blue Water Lily hell.
twenty Sogandhika hells are the equivalent of one Uppala hell;

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhu, vīsati uppalā nirayā, evameko puṇḍariko nirayo.
Twenty lifetimes in the Blue Water Lily hell equal one lifetime in the White Lotus hell.
twenty Uppala hells are the equivalent of one Puṇḍarīka hell;

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhu, vīsati puṇḍarikā nirayā, evameko padumo nirayo.
Twenty lifetimes in the White Lotus hell equal one lifetime in the Pink Lotus hell.
and twenty Puṇḍarīka hells are the equivalent of one Paduma hell.

Padume pana, bhikkhu, niraye kokāliko bhikkhu upapanno sāriputtamoggallānesu cittaṁ āghātetvā”ti.
The mendicant Kokālika has been reborn in the Pink Lotus hell because of his resentment for Sāriputta and Moggallāna.”
Now, bhikkhu, the bhikkhu Kokālika has been reborn in the Paduma hell because he harboured animosity towards Sāriputta and Moggallāna. ”

Idamavoca bhagavā.
That is what the Buddha said.
This is what the Blessed One said.

Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:
Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
Having said this, the Fortunate One, the Teacher, further said this:

“Purisassa hi jātassa,
“A man is born
- “When a person has taken birth

kuṭhārī jāyate mukhe;
with an axe in his mouth.

Yāya chindati attānaṁ,
A fool cuts themselves with it

bālo dubbhāsitaṁ bhaṇaṁ.
when they say bad words.

Yo nindiyaṁ pasaṁsati,
When you praise someone worthy of criticism,

Taṁ vā nindati yo pasaṁsiyo;
or criticize someone worthy of praise,

Vicināti mukhena so kaliṁ,
you choose bad luck with your own mouth:

Kalinā tena sukhaṁ na vindati.
you’ll never find happiness that way.

Appamattako ayaṁ kali,
Bad luck at dice is a trivial thing,

Yo akkhesu dhanaparājayo;
if all you lose is your money

Sabbassāpi sahāpi attanā,
and all you own, even yourself.

Ayameva mahantaro kali;
What’s really terrible luck

Yo sugatesu manaṁ padosaye.
is to hate the holy ones.

Sataṁ sahassānaṁ nirabbudānaṁ,
For more than two quinquadecillion years,

Chattiṁsati pañca ca abbudāni;
and another five quattuordecillion years,

Yamariyagarahī nirayaṁ upeti,
a slanderer of noble ones goes to hell,

Vācaṁ manañca paṇidhāya pāpakan”ti.
having aimed bad words and thoughts at them.”
Having set evil speech and mind against them. ”

Paṭhamo vaggo.

Tassuddānaṁ

Āyācanaṁ gāravo brahmadevo,

Bako ca brahmā aparā ca diṭṭhi;

Pamādakokālikatissako ca,

Turū ca brahmā aparo ca kokālikoti.
