Asurindakasutta
With Bhāradvāja the Fiend Asurindaka
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrel Sanctuary.
Assosi kho asurindakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo:
The brahmin Bhāradvāja the Fiend heard a rumor to the effect that
The brahmin Asurindaka Bhāradvāja heard:
“bhāradvājagotto brāhmaṇo kira samaṇassa gotamassa santike agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajito”ti kupito anattamano yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ asabbhāhi pharusāhi vācāhi akkosati paribhāsati.
a brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan had gone forth from the lay life to homelessness in the presence of the ascetic Gotama. Angry and displeased he went to the Buddha and abused and insulted him with rude, harsh words.
“It is said that the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan has gone forth from the household life into homelessness under the ascetic Gotama.” Angry and displeased, he approached the Blessed One and abused and reviled him with rude, harsh words.
Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā tuṇhī ahosi.
But when he said this, the Buddha kept silent.
When he had finished speaking, the Blessed One remained silent.
Atha kho asurindakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Bhāradvāja the Fiend said to the Buddha,
Then the brahmin Asurindaka Bhāradvāja said to the Blessed One:
“jitosi, samaṇa, jitosi, samaṇā”ti.
“You’re beaten, ascetic, you’re beaten!”
“You're beaten, ascetic! You're beaten, ascetic!”
“Jayaṁ ve maññati bālo,
“‘Ha! I won!’ thinks the fool,
“The fool thinks victory is won
vācāya pharusaṁ bhaṇaṁ;
when speaking with harsh words.
When, by speech, he bellows harshly;
Jayañcevassa taṁ hoti,
Patience is the true victory
But the true victory is
yā titikkhā vijānato.
for those who understand.
Patient endurance for one who understands,.
Tasseva tena pāpiyo,
When you get angry at an angry person
Thereby makes things worse for himself:
yo kuddhaṁ paṭikujjhati;
you just make things worse for yourself.
One who repays an angry man with anger.
Kuddhaṁ appaṭikujjhanto,
When you don’t get angry at an angry person
Not repaying an angry man with anger,
saṅgāmaṁ jeti dujjayaṁ.
you win a battle hard to win.
One wins a battle hard to win.
Ubhinnamatthaṁ carati,
When you know that the other is angry,
He practises for the welfare of both:
attano ca parassa ca;
you act for the good of both
His own and the other's.
Paraṁ saṅkupitaṁ ñatvā,
yourself and the other
When, knowing that his foe is angry,
yo sato upasammati.
if you’re mindful and stay calm.
He mindfully maintains his peace.
Ubhinnaṁ tikicchantānaṁ,
People unskilled in Dhamma
When he achieves the cure of both:
attano ca parassa ca;
consider one who heals both
His own and the other's.
Janā maññanti bāloti,
oneself and the other
The people who consider him a fool
ye dhammassa akovidā”ti.
to be a fool.”
Are unskilled in the Dhamma.”
Evaṁ vutte, asurindakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When he had spoken, Bhāradvāja the Fiend said to the Buddha,
When this was said, the brahmin Asurindaka Bhāradvāja said to the Blessed One:
“abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…
“Excellent, Mister Gotama! …” …
“Magnificent, Master Gotama!…”
abbhaññāsi.
Aññataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosīti.
And Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the perfected.
And the Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the arahants.
