Bilaṅgikasutta

With Bhāradvāja the Bitter Bilaṅgika

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrel Sanctuary.

Assosi kho bilaṅgikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo:
The brahmin Bhāradvāja the Bitter heard a rumor that
The brahmin Bilaṅgika Bhāradvāja heard:

“bhāradvājagotto kira brāhmaṇo samaṇassa gotamassa santike agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajito”ti kupito anattamano yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā tuṇhībhūto ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.
a brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan had gone forth from the lay life to homelessness in the presence of the ascetic Gotama. Angry and displeased he went to the Buddha and stood silently to one side.
“It is said that the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan has gone forth from the household life into homelessness under the ascetic Gotama. ” Angry and displeased, he approached the Blessed One and silently stood to one side.

Atha kho bhagavā bilaṅgikassa bhāradvājassa brāhmaṇassa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya bilaṅgikaṁ bhāradvājaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then the Buddha, knowing Bhāradvāja the Bitter’s train of thought, addressed him in verse:
Then the Blessed One, having known with his own mind the reflection in the brahmin Bilaṅgika Bhāradvāja’s mind, addressed him in verse:

“Yo appaduṭṭhassa narassa dussati,
“Whoever wrongs a man who has done no wrong,
“If one wrongs an innocent man,

Suddhassa posassa anaṅgaṇassa;
a pure man who has not a blemish,
A pure person without blemish,

Tameva bālaṁ pacceti pāpaṁ,
the evil backfires on the fool,
The evil falls back on the fool himself

Sukhumo rajo paṭivātaṁva khitto”ti.
like fine dust thrown upwind.”
Like fine dust thrown against the wind. ”

Evaṁ vutte, bilaṅgikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When he said this, the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Bitter said to the Buddha,
When this was said, the brahmin Bilaṅgika Bhāradvāja said to the Blessed One:

“abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…
“Excellent, Mister Gotama! …” …
“Magnificent, Master Gotama!… ”

abbhaññāsi.

Aññataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosīti.
And Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the perfected.
And the Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the arahants.
