Ahiṁsakasutta

Ahiṃsaka Harmless

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
At Sāvatthī.

Atha kho ahiṁsakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.
Then the brahmin Ahiṃsaka Bhāradvāja, Bhāradvāja the Harmless, approached the Blessed One and exchanged greetings with him. When they had concluded their greetings and cordial talk,
Then the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Harmless went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho ahiṁsakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
he sat down to one side and said to the Blessed One:
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said,

“ahiṁsakāhaṁ, bho gotama, ahiṁsakāhaṁ, bho gotamā”ti.
“I am Ahiṃsaka the Harmless, Master Gotama. I am Ahiṃsaka the Harmless, Master Gotama. ”
“I am Harmless, Mister Gotama, I am Harmless!”

“Yathā nāmaṁ tathā cassa,
[The Blessed One: ] “If one were as one’s name implies
“If you were really like your name,

siyā kho tvaṁ ahiṁsako;
You would be a harmless one.
then you’d be Harmless.

Yo ca kāyena vācāya,
By body, speech,
But a truly harmless person

manasā ca na hiṁsati;
But it is one who does no harm at all or mind,
does no harm by way of

Sa ve ahiṁsako hoti,
Who really is a harmless one
body, speech, or mind;

yo paraṁ na vihiṁsatī”ti.
As he does not harm others. ”
they don’t harm anyone else.”

Evaṁ vutte, ahiṁsakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When this was said, the brahmin Ahiṃsaka Bhāradvāja said to the Blessed One:
When he had spoken, the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Harmless said to the Buddha,

“abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…
“Magnificent, Master Gotama!… ”
“Excellent, Mister Gotama! …” …

abbhaññāsi.

Aññataro ca panāyasmā ahiṁsakabhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosīti.
And the Venerable Ahiṃsaka Bhāradvāja became one of the arahants.
And Venerable Bhāradvāja the Harmless became one of the perfected.
