Tangle With Bhāradvāja of the Matted Hair

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
At Sāvatthī.

Atha kho jaṭābhāradvājo brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.
Then the brahmin Jaṭā Bhāradvāja, Bhāradvāja of the Tangle, approached the Blessed One and exchanged greetings with him.
Then the brahmin Bhāradvāja of the Matted Hair went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.
When they had concluded their greetings and cordial talk, he sat down to one side
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side,

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho jaṭābhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
and addressed the Blessed One in verse:
and addressed the Buddha in verse:

“Antojaṭā bahijaṭā,
“A tangle inside, a tangle outside,
“Tangled within, tangled without:

Jaṭāya jaṭitā pajā;
This generation is entangled in a tangle.
these people are tangled in tangles.

Taṁ taṁ gotama pucchāmi,
I ask you this, O Gotama,
I ask you this, Gotama:

Ko imaṁ vijaṭaye jaṭan”ti.
Who can disentangle this tangle?”
who can untangle this tangle?”

“Sīle patiṭṭhāya naro sapañño,
[The Blessed One: ] “A man established on virtue, wise,
“A wise person grounded in ethics,

Cittaṁ paññañca bhāvayaṁ;
Developing the mind and wisdom,
developing the mind and wisdom,

Ātāpī nipako bhikkhu,
A bhikkhu ardent and discreet:
a keen and alert mendicant—

So imaṁ vijaṭaye jaṭaṁ.
He can disentangle this tangle.
they can untangle this tangle.

Yesaṁ rāgo ca doso ca,
“Those for whom lust and hatred
Those in whom greed, hate, and ignorance

avijjā ca virājitā;
Along with ignorance have been expunged,
have faded away;

Khīṇāsavā arahanto,
The arahants with taints destroyed:
the perfected ones with defilements ended—

tesaṁ vijaṭitā jaṭā.
For them the tangle is disentangled.
they have untangled the tangle.

Yattha nāmañca rūpañca,
“Where name-and-form ceases,
Where name and form

asesaṁ uparujjhati;
Stops without remainder,
cease with nothing left over;

Paṭighaṁ rūpasaññā ca,
And also impingement and perception of form:
as well as impingement and perception of form:

etthesā chijjate jaṭā”ti.
It is here this tangle is cut. ”
it’s there that the tangle is cut.”

Evaṁ vutte, jaṭābhāradvājo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When this was said, the brahmin Jaṭā Bhāradvāja said to the Blessed One:
When he had spoken, Bhāradvāja of the Matted Hair said to the Buddha,

“abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…
“Magnificent, Master Gotama!… ”
“Excellent, Mister Gotama! …” …

aññataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosī”ti.
And the Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the arahants.
And Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the perfected.
