Aggikasutta

With Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper Aggika

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrel Sanctuary.

Tena kho pana samayena aggikabhāradvājassa brāhmaṇassa sappinā pāyaso sannihito hoti:
Now at that time ghee and milk-rice had been set out for the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper, who thought,
Now on that occasion milk-rice with ghee had been set out for the brahmin Aggika Bhāradvāja, who had thought:

“aggiṁ juhissāmi, aggihuttaṁ paricarissāmī”ti.
“I will serve the sacred flame! I will perform the fire sacrifice!”
“I will offer a fire sacrifice, I will perform the fire oblation. ”

Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya rājagahaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi.
Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Rājagaha for alms.
Then, in the morning, the Blessed One dressed and, taking bowl and robe, entered Rājagaha for alms.

Rājagahe sapadānaṁ piṇḍāya caramāno yena aggikabhāradvājassa brāhmaṇassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.
Wandering indiscriminately for almsfood in Rājagaha, he approached Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper’s home and stood to one side.
Walking for alms on uninterrupted alms round in Rājagaha, the Blessed One approached the residence of the brahmin Aggika Bhāradvāja and stood to one side.

Addasā kho aggikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ piṇḍāya ṭhitaṁ.
Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper saw him standing for alms
The brahmin Aggika Bhāradvāja saw the Blessed One standing for alms and addressed him in verse:

Disvāna bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
and addressed him in verse:

“Tīhi vijjāhi sampanno,
“One who’s accomplished in the three knowledges,
“One endowed with the triple knowledge,

jātimā sutavā bahū;
of good birth and ample learning,
Of proper birth, of ample learning,

Vijjācaraṇasampanno,
accomplished in knowledge and conduct
Accomplished in knowledge and conduct,

somaṁ bhuñjeyya pāyasan”ti.
may enjoy this milk-rice.”
Might partake of this milk-rice meal. ”

“Bahumpi palapaṁ jappaṁ,
“Even one who mutters many prayers
[The Blessed One: ] “Even though one mutters many chants,

na jaccā hoti brāhmaṇo;
is no brahmin by birth
One does not become a brahmin by birth

Antokasambu saṅkiliṭṭho,
if they’re filthy and corrupt within,
If one is rotten within and defiled,

kuhanāparivārito.
with a following gained by fraud.
With followers gained by fraudulent means.

Pubbenivāsaṁ yo vedī,
One who knows their past lives,
“One who has known his past abodes,

saggāpāyañca passati;
sees heaven and places of loss,
Who sees heaven and the plane of woe,

Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto,
and has attained the ending of rebirth,
Who has reached the destruction of birth,

abhiññāvosito muni.
is a sage of perfect insight.
A sage consummate in direct knowledge:

Etāhi tīhi vijjāhi,
Because of these three knowledges
“By means of these three kinds of knowledge

tevijjo hoti brāhmaṇo;
a brahmin is a master of the three knowledges.
One is a triple-knowledge brahmin.

Vijjācaraṇasampanno,
Accomplished in knowledge and conduct,
This one accomplished in knowledge and conduct

somaṁ bhuñjeyya pāyasan”ti.
they may enjoy this milk-rice.”
Might partake of this milk-rice meal. ”

“Bhuñjatu bhavaṁ gotamo.
“Eat, Mister Gotama!
[The brahmin Aggika Bhāradvāja: ] “Let Master Gotama eat.

Brāhmaṇo bhavan”ti.
you are truly a brahmin.”
The worthy is a brahmin. ”

“Gāthābhigītaṁ me abhojaneyyaṁ,
“Food enchanted by a verse isn’t fit for me to eat.
[The Blessed One: ] “Food over which verses have been sung, is not fit to be eaten by me.

Sampassataṁ brāhmaṇa nesa dhammo;
That’s not the principle of those who see, brahmin.
Observed by those who see. This, brahmin, is not the principle

Gāthābhigītaṁ panudanti buddhā,
The Buddhas reject things enchanted with verses.
The Enlightened Ones reject such food over which verses have been sung.

Dhamme sati brāhmaṇa vuttiresā.
Since there is such a principle, brahmin, <j>that’s how they live.
As such a principle exists, O brahmin, this is their rule of conduct.

Aññena ca kevalinaṁ mahesiṁ,
Serve with other food and drink
“The consummate one, the great seer

Khīṇāsavaṁ kukkuccavūpasantaṁ;
the consummate one, the great seer,
With taints destroyed and remorse stilled,

Annena pānena upaṭṭhahassu,
with defilements ended and remorse stilled.
Serve with other food and drink.

Khettañhi taṁ puññapekkhassa hotī”ti.
For he is the field for the seeker of merit.”
For he is the field for one seeking merit. ”

Evaṁ vutte, aggikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When he had spoken, the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper said to the Buddha,
When this was said, the brahmin Aggika Bhāradvāja said to the Blessed One:

“abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…
“Excellent, Mister Gotama! …” …
“Magnificent, Master Gotama!”…

aññataro ca panāyasmā aggikabhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosīti.
And Venerable Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper became one of the perfected.
And the Venerable Aggika Bhāradvāja became one of the arahants.
